Pause For Thought: Looking Back At The PlayStation 2

This week brought news that the production of Sony’s PlayStation 2 has ceased. The console first released in March 2000, 2 months short of 13 years ago. Boasting a collection of over 10,000 titles with 1.5 billion software sales there’s no surprise 150 million units have been sold. It’s been a very successful console.

I remember my first memories with the PS2. I received it, the silver version, on Christmas Day 2003 along with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Funnily enough we, myself and my brother, didn’t have a memory card to save our progress on so the console was kept on for at least a few days until we went out and bought a memory card.

From then on our collection of games quickly expanded. Grand Theft Auto 3, Red Faction and the latest FIFA installment were our first purchases. Every game we played we found ourselves astonished by the graphical detail which was very much improved from the PS1.

My first experience with the PS2 – those Orcs are taking a beating from Gandalf.

In the 4 years we played the console, 2007 saw it been succeeded by the PS3, the amount of games we had played had reached nearly triple figures. There’s many games which have stuck in my mind but my fondest memories of my PlayStation 2 gaming era came from the Prince of Persia trilogy.

The Sands of Time was fantastic, I’d never seen a game like it before. It was visually stunning at the time and thoroughly exciting to play. The combat was acrobatic and the platforming was even more so! Warrior Within, it’s sequel, only got better and the cherry on the cake was Two Thrones. These three games made the PlayStation 2 for me.

The console still see’s time for gaming from me on a very rare occurrence but it’s function has been fulfilled for good now.

I’m now curious to discover gamer’s first experiences with the console and their favourite games. Are there any the GamingBoulevard community can share?
