NEWS: IllumiRoom turns your room into a virtual gaming world

Durning CES, Microsoft showed a very impressive tech-demo of the IllumiRoom.

IllumiRoom is a new Microsoft project that combines the Kinect sensor with a projector to blur the lines between the virtual world and the real world.

The technology was shown during a presentation at CES and isn’t something you’ll be able to pick up in stores for the Xbox 360. Microsoft wanted the world to show how you can make your gaming experience more ‘realistic’ using a projector and a Kinect unit.

Wat IllumiRoom does is extending your television screen by projecting moving images on the walls and objects surrounding your television.

IllumiRoom augments the area surrounding a television screen with projected visualizations to enhance the traditional living room entertainment experience” and “can change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences.” Kinect captures the geometry of a room and adapts projected visuals “in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics.”

To see what this technology can mean for gamers, Microsoft created this concept video:

It’s not sure if Microsoft will use this technology in the future but as always, Gaming Boulevard will keep you up to date.
