Welcome to our brutal review of Necromunda: Hired Gun, a game from the Warhammer realm that they forgot to polish.
A small warning ahead of the review, I was very much looking forward to this game, I even purchased its version out of my own pocket. I am a fan of the Warhammer realm and generally do enjoy all of its (non-tactical) games. I will be rather brutal in this review, so stop reading now if you are underaged or “woke”.
Navigate an ocean of crime and corruption to balance the bloody ecosystem of Necromunda as a merciless hired gun. The money’s good, the dog’s loyal, and the gun’s reliable – but can you survive the hunt? Necromunda: Hired Gun is an indie fast-paced, violent, and thrilling FPS set in the darkest reaches of Warhammer 40,000’s most infamous hive city.
For the right price, eliminate the most notorious gangers and mutants. Your armory is a sprawling arsenal. Your body is enhanced with a dozen customizable augments to run on walls and leap over chasms. Your cyber-mastiff will sniff out and kill enemies for you, while your grappling hook allows quick, agile traversal of the massive environments.
Become a Hired Gun. The money’s good, the dog’s loyal, and the gun’s reliable. Embark on a fast-paced, violent, and thrilling FPS set in the darkest reaches of Warhammer 40,000’s most infamous hive city.
Necromunda: Hired Gun is both an amazing game and utter garbage at the same time. It basically looks stunning and I could play the design levels hundreds of times every single time. The Warhammer feeling is so uber present, it is a delight to play any first-person shooter in levels like these. I can not stress it enough that this is the main selling point as to why you should pick up this game if you enjoy the Warhammer realm.
Should you buy it as an FPS lover?
That is a lot more difficult to answer. Maybe? Let me put it like this, the game is playing like DOOM and Warhammer had a baby but that baby got aborted halfway through, it survived in true DOOM fashion, but that is about it. The firing mechanism is just so wrong and unlike a decent bukkake, it should hit its target a little more.
The bullets rarely seem to hit their target when properly aiming and it just felt like I was randomly hitting and randomly missing. With the limited supply of bullets and some enemies needing clip after clip, that is not a good thing. The sniper gun also had its issues where it took a long time to reload and with the hordes of inbound enemies at times, utterly useless as an option. Only the first shot on a distant gunner or so….
Another thing wrong with the fighting mechanics, the manual kill. I found it to be very unresponsive and I usually ended up either failing to kill my opponent or wasting extra bullets on it. I just wish this was a little more polished, it just misses that oompf for the game to really shine.
Now, how do you rate a gorgeous game that plays like this? You take all the good, all the bad, and see what weighs out the rest.
In conclusion, having loved the graphics, but issues on the game mechanics do sadly more damage to the enjoyment of this game. I am sure that if the game got more polished, it could even turn out to be a solid 8, but for now, a disappointing 6…
