Welcome to our review of Chop, a 2D arena fighting game that will end friendships for real.
CHOP is a 2D arena fighting game with a lot of gore and fast-paced action. Swords will fly, bodies will be chopped, friendships will break! Accessible in its mechanics, it offers a real strategic dimension and a depth of gameplay that will put your skills to the test.
One hit to kill, respawn almost instantly. CHOP is meant to give a feeling close to what you can experience in fast FPS, mixed with platformer setting and influences from beloved titles. it speaks to those who like gore, comics, post-apo and are looking for a supercharged party game!
The game offers a unique twist with Rush Out mode. It doesn’t matter how many players you kill. Your goal is to rush out through your portal as fast as possible. Don’t worry, you still need to defeat enemies, as it’s the only way to open the portal.
Chop is a game that will force gamers to be on the edge of their skills, it is that high-paced. Everything you do, might be influenced by the speed of your button pressing. I died so many times and made so many swift killings just by either succeeding or by failing the timing of things.
Chop is mostly designed to ruin friendships as the entire game shines mostly in coop mode. I did some extensive testing in single-player mode, with adjustable bots to play against, I had hard and easy times. On the outer spectrum of things, I was often just barely able to react after getting cut down.
Despite the numerous instakills I seemingly experienced, I did enjoy this game. Hard to master but so rewarding when you succeed.
Despite all these positive points, the game lends itself to purposely ruining friendships if you decide to ambush a single player. Sure, the point is to escape and all, but let’s be honest, we know you will indulge in this tactic from time to time right?
Graphically, Chop is a bit of a miss in my humble opinion. The destructive nature of the game and the tiny size of the Switch’s screen… I just do not know. I felt like this game had to be played on a higher resolution so more could fit the screen. I often felt the “killing fields” were not big enough.
In between levels, however, the graphics were awesome really. I loved the comic book approach for the menus and the design of the characters was just perfectly fitting.
Another thing I noticed, I have played Killer Queen Black before and I must say, the comparisons can be made and I did like KQB more due to its added gameplay options. You had really do the team play and Chop does provide this, just not as good…
In conclusion, Chop has its ups and downs and while the ups do clearly beat out the downs, my main concern will be longevity when playing solo. If you always got friends to play with, Chop will be awesome, but as a single-player, it might outlive its due rather quickly?
