Indie Corner: Creepy Road

Creepy Road is a 2D run and gun game with a very promising art-style. It’s a very cartoonish style and the caricatural aspects really stand out with the use of very powerful and intense colors. The developers Groovy Milk set up the game with a nice intro cut-scene in which you take the role of Flint Trucker, a trucker that is on his way home to the love of his life Angelina. While dreaming about Angelina a crazy circus bear jumps in front of the truck and causes Flint to crash. He will have to finish his journey on foot.

While Flint is hiking he notices that the world has gone completely mad. Flint has to fight hordes of enemies on his way to save his Angelina. While running and shooting you can find new weapons to help you fight the masses of zombies and crazy animals. Sometimes you can pick up some food to restore your health bar. You can switch between your weapons to use whichever suits the situation best.

There is however one problem that bothered me from the very start. If an enemy is too close to you, really against your character, you can’t hit him. So, you will have to make some awkward jumps and moves to get them. Another negative point on the game would be that it tends to get a bit repetitive with just a different background. The boss fights are intense and do make up for a lot. However, a lot of them seemed a bit too familiar for me. Some of them felt like a level from Cuphead with a different art-style slapped on top of them. With lots of the same type of threats and mechanics.

The humor in the game also is a redeeming factor that gives the game a bit of an edge. If you want to complete the entire game you’re really in for a ride. The game gets harder and harder and you will have to perfect your techniques in order to keep up. If you are into hard platformers/run and gun games, this might be a game for you. However, if you are looking for a strong story I would suggest checking out some other similar games with a lot more compelling storyline like Guns, Gore and Cannoli. Creepy Road is definitely worth a play but does not blow my mind.
