Super Mario Party Jamboree doesn’t steal its name, it’s a jam-packed party filled to the brim with chaotic fun, just the way we like it. With 7 boards, 22 characters, and a whopping 110 mini-games, this installment is shaping up to be the ultimate Mario Party experience. I went hands-on with the new game, let’s jump in!
We kicked things off with the classic mode, picking from an impressive character roster that now includes newcomers like Pauline and Ninji. It’s a Mario Party session in its purest form: Wiggler walking around in the background while we take turns rolling the dice by flicking the Joy-Con like Mario himself. Land on a space, and it’s either good or bad with bonuses scattered around. And, of course, after each round on the board, we jumped into a mini-game. Some are solo, others in small teams and while this is standard Mario Party, it’s still a blast to play in a group. That said, die-hard fans won’t find much new in this mode. It’s a comfortable, familiar party experience, fun, but nothing groundbreaking.
Where Jamboree really shines is in its fresh modes, starting with Koopathlon. Now, this is where things got spicy! It’s a multiplayer race where you’re speeding through a sequence of mini-games. The faster you nail the mini-games, the quicker your character moves around the board. It’s like Mario Kart, but with mini-games as your accelerator. Each round gets harder, ramping up the pressure as you dash to beat your opponents. I played against the CPU for now, but this mode supports up to 20 players online; so I can already picture the chaos! It’s fast, competitive, and adds real value to the overall experience.
Another new mode is Bowser Kaboom Squad, playable with up to 8 players online or against the CPU. In this mode, you’re tasked with smashing boxes and loading bombs into a cannon to defeat the Imposter Bowser. But Bowser’s not going down without a fight; he’s chasing you down while you frantically break boxes. After each round, you jump into a mini-game, and your performance there grants you upgrades for the next round ,carry more bombs, smash boxes faster, and more. It adds a nice strategic twist and demands teamwork, which is a fresh take on the Mario Party series.
It’s clear that Nintendo is here to spice up the tried-and-true Mario Party formula with these new modes, and honestly, it’s a great move. Plus, there’s the Mini-Game Bay, which will feature daily-themed mini-games, keeping things fresh every time you boot up the game. It’s perfect for those quick daily sessions to scratch that party game itch.
Early conclusion
While the classic mode remains a safe bet for fans, the new modes inject the right amount of innovation to keep things exciting. Fingers crossed the full game continues this momentum, but for now, Super Mario Party Jamboree looks like a party you won’t want to miss.
