Review: The Wonderful 101 Remastered (Steam)

Welcome to our review of one of the best games on Wii U to finally get a new lease on life thanks to a very successful campaign on Kickstarter. This is The Wonderful 101 Remastered.

The Wonderful 101 is a “Unite Action” action-adventure game developed by PlatinumGames Inc., directed by action game luminary Hideki Kamiya, and originally released on the Nintendo Wii U.

In this game, players take control of the Wonderful Ones, heroes from all over the world chosen to defend the Earth from all manner extraterrestrial threats! When the peaceful Blossom City comes under attack by alien invaders, Wonder-Red, Wonder-Blue, and the rest of the Wonderful Ones suit up and unite to save the world!

The Wonderful 101: Remastered will be released on Nintendo Switch, with versions for other platforms becoming available via stretch goals. We also plan to add a host of amazing extras as stretch goals are met, with the goal of making The Wonderful 101: Remastered the definitive depiction of our heroes’ exploits!

With the current pandemic, this game got released on Steam first and that is also where I played it. I will admit this game was very high on my wishlist for this time of year and even made me wonder if I should reconsider supporting the Kickstarter or not. I have lost way too much cash on Kickstarter in the past, not forgetting the scammers of Warned Collectors etc … Switch has been rather bad for my wallet when I could not just buy a game in retail.

Every single fiber knew to trust Platinum games and trusted that a great product would be delivered, but despite everything, I decided against it out of monetary reasons. Now fast forward to today, where I have to write a review of one of my favorite games from the Wii U era. Yes, I am one of those owning a Wii U and I will do even better, I own all games available on the platform, every single title released physically worldwide.

I loved this game because it brought a ton of fun to the console with very little games on it. A game that was smart in its approach to how to play. You used the controls and the Wii U pad to get your “crew” to help you fight off the alien invaders. The idea behind it was novel and the gameplay was so much fun.

Fast Forward again to today and my admission that I no longer liked how this game played. The game is still the same in its feeling, but I just can not pinpoint what went wrong, so I will promise you this, I will be reviewing all THREE versions in a comparison piece later this month, WII U and I will purchase the game on Switch to make this happen.

On my Surface Pro, the game played very smoothly, but the entire time, the tutorial screens were overlaying the game with what to do, which annoyed me beyond belief. I truly would have smashed its screen if it had not been such an expensive tablet. Even losing to 10-year-olds in Fortnite got me less triggered that this.

Also, I do not recall this game being incredibly hard and punishing. I played in normal mode and it took me dozens of times to get past the sixth chapter. At a certain point, I was just about to give up playing and restart the game in easy mode. I really do not recall any of this in my WII U gameplay.

As it stands now, I simply can not rate this game, because I would barely give it a three points score. The game did not appear to age very well or it is the lack of a touchscreen or whatever, I just do not know. All I know is that I never had any fun with this game. No tutorial to get you to learn the basic controls, you are just thrown into things and there, have at it.

Well, not for me, I will not have at it, I will anticipate my purchase of the game on Switch to get back to The Wonderful 101, but for now, it is a bad experience.

To put things in perspective, that chapter 6 boss fight, he hit me three times to die. Not a single time in around 8 games did I even manage to successfully land a single hit. I played using a controller and I just kept struggling with controls even more than 2 hours into the game at that time. I have now played a total of 5 hours and have been stressed for 4… I guess that says it all.
