Welcome to our review of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, out now on PS4 and this massive Role playing game is the games’ Ultimate Edition for a reason.
The god Eothas, once thought to be destroyed, returns to life in the form of a titanic statue – nearly killing you as he destroys everything in his path. It’s up to you, the Watcher of Caed Nua, to discover Eothas’ purpose and decide to help or hinder his efforts.
With an enormous open world, a massive cast of characters, beautiful hand-painted backgrounds, and a story you can play your way, Obsidian Entertainment is proud to bring you Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
You’ll be accompanied by companions familiar and new as you travel through the Deadfire. Some, like the loyal Edér, have stayed with you out of a sense of personal duty. Others, like the unpredictable Serafen, have their own mysterious reasons for accompanying you.
New to Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the companion relationships system, where companions will not only engage with you, but each other, depending on the decisions you make and events they experience in the world.
Pillars of Eternity is basically a game that could be called exemplary for the genre of role-playing games. Often highly credited for its deep stories and its glorious battles. Originally released on PC, I will be very short about the game itself, this game is amazing and easily an 9 out of 10 in the current version on PlayStation 4. I honestly think I would rate it a 9 when playing on PC.
Allow me to explain where I am coming from here, it is important after all to know my motivation. As this game is built for PC, it is very clear that you need a mouse to properly control it. While the controls do their job in getting you by, they just miss that little ooompf, you know. That little bit to make it just that more fluid to play.
I did struggle most at first. To give an example, I somehow managed to separate my two characters and ran into enemies. But my second character was so far off, it took no less than 7 turns for him to get to the action, needless to say, I had already died at that time.
Oh, I should probably mention right now that I decided to choose the Real-Time Strategy approach to the game and not the pause function one. I like to plan out my attacks and this is the purpose of my point to be made. This is exactly why I struggled, under normal circumstances, I would not have split up and not fallen in this fight. I would have basically ambushed the enemies and got some damage in prior to them hitting me hard.
I do really like the battle system a lot. The freedom is actually very welcome and I honestly think this game has raised the bar in this aspect. Despite struggling with the mechanics, I just feel the way to play this game is not for PlayStation, despite my clear love for the game.
What I also noticed, but this may be due to having a review code edition and we all know day 1 patches exist for a reason. For my gameplay, the game did crash once on me and I did experience a handful of frame drops throughout my gameplay. I played the game on a PS4 Slim for the record and I was at the most recent software version at that time.
But even with all those things happening, I still can not say I hated anything about this game. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a marvelous game and should be credited as such. Glitches happen and I just expect those to be patched out in the future. My honest advice is to look at gameplay videos and see how this game looks.
For me, I never played the initial Pillars of Eternity game, having always been a Nintendo first gamer and well, we all know this game did not go Red before. Now I was able to play this second game on Playstation 4 and the funny thing, despite getting a review code from the developers, I am actually considering buying it myself on Steam so I can play it in its originally intended fashion.
Will it play better? I honestly assume so. I can not pinpoint the feeling, but just the entire game feels like it is one of those “best played on PC’ experiences. Again, not discrediting the game itself, just a gut feeling. The game is getting a score of 9 out of 10, I did consider taking it down half a point due to my struggles with the controls, but that would honestly feel like taking down a point for my own personal opinion.
And yes, I do realize I have done this in previous reviews, but none of them were of a game so great as Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
In conclusion, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is fantastic! Check out gameplay videos to check out which of the specific way of both optional gameplays you prefer and then just sit back and emerge yourself in this epos.
