Welcome to our preview of Snack World: The dungeon crawl – Gold. Let the dungeon crawl…begin!
Snack World originally released in Japan back in August 2017 on 3DS, the first Summer of Nintendo Switch. The port over to Nintendo switch came the next year, in the middle of April, Japan was treated to this game. Originally they dub this a multimedia franchise, with anime, games, figures and the likes. I was in Japan at the time of this series being on TV and well, I remember the full meter worth of merchandise in Yodobashi, the big multimedia mammoth store in Akihabara.
Having bought several figures at the time and some “mystery boxes”, I also purchased the game itself and till today, I regret my Japanese is not good enough to properly play this game and my first experience with the English version made it painfully clear again where I lacked skills as the double entendres and puns throughout the game were too much for me.
Now that I was able to really understand everything, it makes sense again and as the title says, this is a dungeon crawler but so much more. It is like Level 5 (yes, the studio behind Layton, Yo-Kai and so many more) just handpicked a few genres and threw them all together.
At times, you feel like you are playing a mixture between Pokemon, Digimon, Yo-kai Watch and more. Adding in dungeon crawling with a sniff of Link’s Awakening and you got the basic gist of Snack World. At the time of writing this preview, I am in the third chapter and I am simply adoring the gameplay and often pondering whether the puns are not too much.
The reason I mention this is because while I was fighting in the “gorgonzola” ruins, one of my friends is called “Bearnaise”, … Everything has a double “Snack” related entendre and I have wondered at around the 1-hour mark if it was disturbing or not. The great gameplay in this game is quite the counterpart for the silly notions of using the food puns.
As I am still new to exploring the actual game, I can also say that right now, I love the gameplay itself. As I previously mentioned, the game has a variety of genres, from collecting to grinding in order to level up, to adventuring and exploring the dungeons and so much more. More information will be available in my full review which is coming out near the release day of the game.
For now, I will leave you with a teaser or should I say malteaser… Snack World’s description on Wikipedia actually says it all. A traditional fantasy world combined with convenience stores, smartphones, and other elements of the modern world. That one line sums it all up perfectly and when my full review hits the internet, I will go into deeper detail and divulge some more information in regards to the physical toys that exist and if they add to the game or not.
So look out for my full review when it drops and grab a snack in the meantime!
