Indie Corner: Megaton Rainfall

Welcome to our review of Megaton Rainfall, a superhero First Person Shooter out now on Nintendo Switch.

Megaton Rainfall is a first-person superhero game. A global alien invasion is taking place and you must face it – alone. Chase massive destruction devices at supersonic speeds around an Earth that’s as large as the real thing and populated with semi-procedurally generated cities.

Then finish off the alien devices with your lethal energy blasts. Just be careful to avoid human casualties! You are so powerful, you’ll leave a trail of collapsed buildings if you miss your targets!

Feel the unprecedented freedom of movement as you fly through buildings, break the sound barrier, and accelerate to extraordinary speeds. Then rise above the atmosphere, circumnavigate the Earth in seconds, and get ready for your next battle. ‘Megaton Rainfall’ is the ultimate superhero experience!”

At least, that is what the promotional text says, for me, it was far from that.

Sporting a very refreshing idea, Megaton Rainfall promises to bring the ultimate superhero experience to the Nintendo Switch after previously releasing on PlayStation 4, VR, Xbox One and Steam. Going full circle is always nice! In this game, you are the superhero that needs to protect the planet against the alien enemies.

You start off learning the basics on how to fly with the world as your playground. While all this is very impressive, the world will also be yours to protect. Flying around clearly feels weird at first, it took me a while to get used to this, mostly that you had a different button to gain altitude. Everything else is done by the use of the two thumbsticks for moving around, left for moving up and down, the right stick for horizontal movements. It all fits perfectly, but ascending takes that extra button to gain speed.

Once you get the flying covered, it does take a while in game too before it lets you advance… Then you get your first weapon, you shoot a burst from your hands. Really like a superhero huh? Later in the game, you get more upgrades allowing you to take out bigger enemies with less effort, but at the same time, when you miss the target, they end up damaging whichever city you are protecting.

It all sounds amazing, but this game was clearly not made for a console like the Switch. I would even go further and say this game is perfect for VR, but not a console. Everything about the flying around shouts VR, not handheld or TV-based gaming. The game just falls short of providing a real impression.

Enemies have clear weak points and most of the time, you can just fly real close and hit em straight on. No real challenge once you realize how to play this game. Sorry for spoiling it, but heck, the biggest difficulty is not purposely blowing up Dubai when you see it. I guess that makes me more of a villain rather than a superhero right?

In conclusion, Megaton Rainfall is a game with a cool idea but it just feels clunky to play. Flying is awkward to some extent and while it is fun to destroy enemies, I often felt more inclined to purposely destroy cities, … I honestly can not say I would recommend this game and as such, my rating is 50%, an interesting idea but it plays too weirdly to really enjoy.
