Hands-on: Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef

During the Facts convention, we were able to play the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef, a chaotic shooter set in the Warhammer universe. Is this a game you should add to your list? Let’s find out!

Classic 2D side-scrolling madness

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef is the newest game created by Rogueside, the developers of Guns, Gore & Cannoli. The developers already showcased their skills when it comes to creating over-the-top brutal 2D side-scrollers but now they got their hands on the beloved Warhammer 40,000 franchise. We only played through one level of the upcoming game but it’s clear to see that the base of this gorgeous hand-drawn 2D action adventure is a lot similar to Guns, Gore & Cannoli. It’s all about picking a class for your warrior, gathering some powerful guns and taking down the hordes of enemies while doing so. Since it’s now a Warhammer licensed game, everything fits into the Warhammer universe perfectly. From the characters and enemies to the guns and support characters, it all feels right at home in the Warhammer universe and I’m sure fans will have a blast thanks to gorgeously created visuals. As said before, it’s all hand-drawn and looks way more colorful compared to the other Warhammer games on the market. It’s a welcomed change in scenery and aside from that, the game offers some fun and addictive gameplay too.

Chaotic fun

Although we were able to play only one level, it did showcase what the game is all about. It’s all about classic 2D chaotic fun and the best part about it all is the fact that it’s playable in co-op. The only thing you’ll need to play this one in co-op is connecting a second controller to jump right in. I love how easy it is to join in, which really makes it one of the more accessible co-op games in its genre. Playing together with a friend makes it all a bit more chaotic and thus also a lot more fun. There are tons of things going on all at once, so in order to stay alive, you better prepare for some epic shootouts. The game likes to throw waves of enemies at you, all with different skills and weapons. In order to survive, you’ll need to be on the move constantly and make sure you don’t run out of ammo or health. In order to keep you up and gunning, the game offers plenty of ammo and special healing orcs to keep you in the action. Running around and shooting everything you see is clearly the game’s main selling point and it works incredibly well, especially in co-op mode.

We only played the game for a couple of minutes but had a lot of fun doing so. Besides the explosive shooting, the game also features some small puzzling now and then, forcing you to look for hidden levers to open doors. Those moments give you some time to take a breath and explore the gorgeously crafted environment a bit more. During our time with this game, it was clear to see that the developers certainly found the right balance between chaotic fun and exploration.

After we survived the regular waves of enemies we ended up in a boss level where we faced a stronger enemy. The boss level added some extra flair to the overall environment and although it wasn’t really clear which characters were part of the scenery and which were the ones we had to attack, the first introduction to a boss fight certainly left us wanting more. There were some issues with the hardware at the convention, so sadly we didn’t get to see any of the cutscenes but I’m pretty sure those will be rather hilarious in the final product.

Early conclusion:

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef is shaping up to become a fun and chaotic 2D side-scrolling shooter set in the Warhammer universe. If you played Guns, Gore & Cannoli before, you know what to expect. It’s certainly worth adding to your list if you’re looking for a fun and addictive co-op shooter.
