Hands-on: PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night

PJ Masks need to save the day once more! I was able to play the upcoming PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night where I had to assemble my little team of heroes in order to defeat the evil once and for all.

PJ Masks assemble!

This new 3D action-adventure is set in the world of PJ Masks where Amaya, Connor, and Greg live everyday lives during the day, but at night, become the superhero team PJ Masks. In PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night, available October 29, 2021, on consoles and PC, fans can get stuck into fighting crime as they use special abilities to take down the night-time baddies. Play as the heroic Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko as you discover hidden collectibles, and try to take down Romeo, Luna Girl, Night Ninja, and more villains at PJ Masks HQ, the City Streets, and Rooftops, and even on the moon.

It sounds like a child-friendly version of The Avengers at first and this was the feeling I got while playing the game too. It plays as a rather classic action/adventure platformer where you’ll automatically switch between the heroes, using their unique powers to advance. As Owlette I could hover over the streets while Gekko enabled me to crawl on walls, just like other superheroes. It’s fun to see how these different powers alter the gameplay to keep things fun and interesting for the younger players. As you would have expected, this game is aimed at younger gamers who are preferably also fans of cartoons. This means that the gameplay itself is rather easy and straightforward and the collectibles aren’t well-hidden at all. For veteran players, this might become pretty boring rather fast but I’m pretty sure young gamers will love every second of it. Since it’s not that hard to discover and collect everything, you’ll constantly be rewarded for your efforts, which is a huge motivation to keep going.

Variation is key here

What the game does best in my opinion, is offering a lot of variation while playing, not only by offering you several heroes to play with but also by altering the levels themselves. Not every level is just a straightforward platforming segment. During my demo, I also got introduced to a thrilling car level where I had to dodge obstacles and collect all collectibles at a high speed. It’s a fun variation on the overall gameplay and makes it even more fun to play. Not knowing what to expect next is one of the game’s better qualities for sure.

Early conclusion:

PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night is shaping up to become a fun superheroes game for the young gamer. It offers thrilling missions and enough variation in gameplay to continue your adventure. It’s one to keep an eye out for if you’re a fan of the genre.
