Review: Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath expands the original game on all fronts. New story, new fighters, new stages, and new fatalities.

Back to the future

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath adds about 4 hours of storyline to the original. The new storyline starts almost a second after the original storyline ended. Just when you thought all was done and dusted in the multi-realms of Mortal Kombat, Netherrealm throws in another curveball. Leading the story is the ultimate Mortal Kombat bad guy, Shang Tsung. The nemesis from the very first Mortal Kombat is fully voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who portrayed him in the 1995 movie adding some extra Hollywood flair. Without giving away too much… If Shang Tsung is siding with the good guys, something bad’s about to happen.

Mortal Kombat 11 – Story line

If you haven’t played Mortal Kombat 11 before, you might not know about the awesome story mode. In this story mode, you’ll battle as many different characters intertwined with awesome high-quality cutscenes. No corners were cut for the expansion. The new story is up to par with the original production-wise. Fighters previously not featured in the original story are now used to their full extent and even adding 2 new additions.

Three new fighters

Right from the start of the new storyline, Fujin is introduced as a new character. The god of wind was a favorite of many fans and is now finally available. The Fujin character fitted my playing style perfectly. I will surely use this character more in future Mortal Kombat sessions. Queen Sheeva was already briefly featured in the original story but was never available as a playable character until now. “Female Goro” felt like a real powerhouse that obviously fit the character’s look. Not really my style, I like to more agile characters, but nonetheless I can see her being used a lot too, except not by me.

Mortal Kombat 11 – RoboCop

Next up the one character, I’ve been looking forward to the most… None other than Alex J. Murphy’s corpse a.k.a. RoboCop. If you own the previous Kombat Pack you can now relive the RoboCop vs. Terminator moment you hoped for as a kid. This time you won’t get utterly disappointed. Neatherrealm might’ve unbeknownst to them right the wrong that was done to yours truly so many years ago… But I’m digressing. RoboCop in Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath looks awesome. He’s modeled on Peter Weller who also provided his voice which makes the RoboCop fanboy in me very happy. The character suits a more ranged style as he is a bit clunky when it comes down to close-range combat. Which fits his physique very well.

New stages

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath also adds 4 new stages with Dead Pool and the Soul Chamber being my favorites. I’m nostalgic when it comes down to these kinds of things so seeing these stages return to form in awesome Mortal Kombat 11 graphics made me hyped. The RetroKade arena is not really doing it for me but hey it’s free content so I’m not complaining. Yep, that’s right, the new stages are available to everyone, not just the Aftermath owners.

Friendship

The new stages also bring back some stage-specific fatalities. Sadly they only work in 3 stages: Tournament, Dead Pool, and Shaolin Trap Dungeon. Here’s hoping future updates will add more. Another type of fatality is re-introduced, namely the Friendship fatality. These types of fatalities were the mirror opposite of the brutal fatalities. When doing these types of fatalities you spare your opponent and instead do something silly. It’s nice to have them back but I’ll stick to the gory ones for now.

Conclusion

New players who buy the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Kollection will get a great deal. This pack includes the base game, the Kombat Pack, and the Aftermath expansion. If you happen to own the original game and just want to add the expansion, be prepared to pay a hefty amount of money. Don’t get me wrong, everything included in Aftermath is more than awesome enough but the price for the expansion will deter a lot of gamers who already paid full price for the base game. I can’t say I would blame them. On the other hand, they would miss out on RoboCop. Dead or Alive, you’re coming with me…
