Hands-on: FIFA 19 on Nintendo Switch

At the Nintendo Post E3 event in the Netherlands, we were invited to play the latest Fifa installment on Nintendo Switch.

When you are at an event with games like Smash Bros Ultimate, Killer Queen Black and the new Pokemon Let’s Go games, a game like FIFA is usually ignored as everyone wants to see what magic the other games hold. I admit that at first, I was no different.

For me personally, Dragon Ball FighterZ was my first pick to play, I just love that game. My second one, to my own big surprise, was FIFA 19. I played and reviewed FIFA 18 in the past and I wanted to see how it lived up to its predecessor. A game plagued with some bugs and the missing career mode. I remember at one point having a glitch where I could not pass forward in the middle of the pitch. I always had to cross that middle circle manually. Nothing a reboot did not fix, but things like these, you tend to remember.

As it had been a while, the demo guy explained the controls to me, I picked up the controller and started playing. It became clear that this new 19 edition did play a little more fluently on Switch. I remember the way the players turned around their axis, it seemed to have been slightly improved upon.

The demo that was available to us had 12 teams and the matches were basic one on one. I ended up picking Manchester United and I loved how much the players did resemble the actual players. It seems like the game did improve visually.

The gameplay itself was typical of FIFA games in general. I did not notice any big improvements, but that’s totally fine. It played smoothly and I did not encounter any bugs. Mind you this was my first and only play of this game so far, it did however not leave a very big impression.

Am I looking forward to play the full game?

Yes, despite not being overly impressed, I am still very much looking forward to play it. I had some parts where I wanted to experiment more. Like when I hit a lob over the defense, I want to try it a few more times, see if I can really manipulate it the way I want. Same applies to shooting at the goal and hopefully scoring more than the sole goal I scored in my hands on.

The game is coming on September 28!
