Indie Corner: Immortal Redneck

Welcome to our review of one of the first great First Person Shooters on Nintendo Switch, Immortal Redneck!

Blast a swarm of mummies using more than 50 weapons and explore Giza’s pyramids in this frantic shooter

Immortal Redneck is an FPS set in Egypt with rogue-lite elements. The game mixes old-school first-person shooter action with rogue-lite mechanics. Frantic gameplay, twitch controls, and an arcade-style feel meet randomly generated dungeons, a complete skill tree, permanent death and 9 classes with different traits.

The game revolves around a redneck tourist who wakes up mummified in ancient Egypt after an accident. Why is he here? How did he survive the accident? And why the hell is he mummified?!

The answer lies within the three danger-filled pyramids of Giza, all protected by an army of monsters and huge bosses. Obviously, your mission is to get inside the pyramids, kill all the enemies and discover what’s going on!

As this is a rogue-lite FPS, you do start the game first trying to learn the basics. Learning how to shoot, learning how to dodge and how to use the delay mechanic as to avoid incoming fire or to escape from hordes of incoming enemies. Those enemies being very varied and totally befitting in this game, from hordes of froglike creatures to hanging mummies, … There are many cool and awesome enemies out there, each with their own attack pattern and weakness. All in pure FPS style.

The game itself reminds me mostly of Serious Sam, though it has been compared to Ziggurat as well in the past. I say the past because this game has been released before on other platforms, but it is just amazing to see a game like this perform so amazingly on a handheld console like the Switch. I said this before and I will say it again, Switch is such an amazing platform and Immortal Redneck, to be blunt, is a game that just shows off what our lovely little console can do.

It does not underperform, never was I under the impression something was off. The action is smooth and killing the enemies is even smoother. That is if you reload fast enough. But that is just up to your play style, not the game itself. Personally, I loved slowing down time and making my move then. It was only after an hour or so into playing that I really started using it more. I was stupid not to take more advantage out of it. This system is actually an added bonus and allows you to survive at times you otherwise would not.

Immortal Rednecks might be the best throwback to the original FPS genre, whether you are dodging incoming fire, performing evasive moves so you can reload, … It brings back all the feels for the classics like Unreal Tournament, …

My sole regret, there is no basic gun with unlimited ammo. Everything runs out if you are not careful and well, it can get annoying having to use the big weapons on small fry… Luckily the ammo cases do their job just fine, just something I disliked.

In conclusion, Immortal Redneck is a near perfect First Person Shooter on Nintendo Switch and I loved it, it brings both a challenge and an experience to the console and I am very OK with that. My rating for Immortal Redneck stands at 90%!
