Tech Review: Seagate Game Drive for Xbox

If you bought an Xbox One on Day One, you’re stuck with a 500GB model and you most likely had to delete some files in order for the new Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. It’s a big new game that comes with a huge amount of needed space on your console. So what if you’re memory is full but you don’t want to erase your files? Well, the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox might be the thing you’re looking for.

2TB of plug-and-play fun

The Seagate Game Drive for Xbox has been on the market for a while now and supports both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles. The biggest selling point is, of course, its storage size of 2TB, twice as much as the current Xbox One model. The Xbox One has a lot of great content to offer but that doesn’t make it any easier for the gamers. They have to decide what’s most important, a lot of games, or a lot of DLC packs? Since the internal memory of the console isn’t that big, a lot of gamers are struggling with the memory management of their console. Seagate offers a solid and not that expensive ($129) for your problems, the 2TB Game Drive.

The looks

Based on the specifications, you might already have guessed it but this drive is extremely small and light to hold in your hands. It fits in one hand perfectly and is very portable. Since it uses a plug-and-play system, you can easily take your drive with you to your friend’ house, load your files to his/her console, log in using your Gamertag and enjoy the games you were playing back home. Thanks to its size, this is the perfect external game drive to take with you.

When it comes to the looks Seagate went for a green front, matching the Xbox brand. The upper right corner has the Xbox logo, including a LED to indicate if the drive is being used. The Seagate logo is located at the bottom right side. The logos are kept visible but don’t interfere with the design itself. The back of the drive is matt black with some information about the device, nothing special really.

Going for the green makes sense since it’s the brand color of Xbox but the drive doesn’t really match with the current generation of consoles. If you’re using the drive on a glossy black or white Xbox One or the glossy black Xbox 360 Elite, it doesn’t look that good. If this bothers you too much, you can easily hide the drive behind your console since the USB ports are located on the back of Microsoft’ consoles.

Plug-and-play

The way you use the game drive works extremely well on the other hand. Just like the package promises, you’re ready to go after you plugged your drive into your console. If you did use the drive before, it will only take a couple of seconds to create the desired Xbox folder. You can even use your Gamertag to name your device so that everybody knows that this drive belongs to you. There really aren’t any problems with the connection of the drive to your console, everything happens flawlessly and before you know it, you increased the console’ memory with 2TB of storage, ready to be used! Once connected you can migrate files to your new drive or start installing new games using this extra drive.

The performance of the drive itself is rather good. It takes a while to write data to it, Titanfall 2 took around 8 minutes to transfer but reading files works extremely well. It’s even a hair faster than loading your games from the Xbox One console itself. It’s great to see that you don’t have any latency and that this drive just responds to your requests like the internal memory of the console itself would do. Since this drive is designed specifically for the Xbox consoles, it’s no surprise that the performance of this game drive is very impressive, although we would have wanted a slightly higher writing time.

Conclusion:

Seagate’s Game Drive for Xbox is a great game drive that adds 2TB of storage to your console, enough for around 50 extra games. The drive is very easy to use thanks to the plug-and-play mechanism and playing games straight from the drive results in slightly faster loading times. Too bad the write speed isn’t as fast as I would have hoped but aside of that, this Game Drive is the perfect solution if you’re looking for more storage on your Xbox system(s).
