Towerborne, the newest action-adventure game created by Stoic, the studio that brought you the award-winning Banner Saga trilogy. I got the opportunity to go hands-on with this one and must say I was impressed.
Set out on an adventure
Our demonstration started in the Belfry, the games local HUB that also serves as the online meeting point. Since it’s an unreleased game, there weren’t any other players online of course. Towerborne can be played solo but is more fun in co-op so that’s what we did during the Gamescom demo. Together with other journalists we went out on a quest to defeat a deadly mushroom monster, which was rather thrilling!
The main characters, called Aces are divided into four main weapon groups each with their own different styles and advantages. I played with one main weapon while others had sword and shield for a more defensive play. Since we were playing together, the different styles complimented each other well and we all had our special abilities to use during combat. The combat itself reminded me of the good old days of Street of Rage put in a modern version. Enemies attack from right and left and by damaging them with light and heavy attacks, you’ll advance. To make it a bit easier you also have special and magical attacks to inflict even more damage to your opponents, it really works like a charm and in no time we were beating our enemies. The demo ended with a boss battle against an evil giant mushroom, nothing to worry about since we were playing an easy level. It’s also good to know that the difficulty of the levels scales depending on how many people are playing it, just to keep things fair.
Early conclusion:
It’s a bit early to say but judging from the demo alone it looks like Towerborne might become a new hit. Can’t wait to explore and play some more!
