Welcome to our review of Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest, a very big game with a twist.
Become an all-powerful Warlock and lead one of 8 races to ultimate victory. Discover unique worlds, plunder the underworld and conquer cities. Planar Conquest is a 4X strategy game inspired by Master of Magic. Created to ensure this amazing playability of games from the past, but wrapped in a modern package.
“Explore, Develop, Use, Exterminate” – these four words provide the game with fun and challenge.
Use diplomacy to gain an advantage over your opponents. Play battles at the tactical level. Hire heroes and equip them with magical weapons and armor. Recruit unique and powerful Titans and force them to carry out your orders! Gain experience and make your army grow stronger after successive victories. Use tactical, strategic and global spells to destroy your enemies.
Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest as a game is massive. There is a big tutorial that covers the basics but leaves all to be discovered. Going from planning your town to how much money it makes to harvesting crops. It has been a very long time since I played such an expansive game and I wonder if I actually liked my experience. The reason why I ask myself this question, is very simple. I am unsure if I had fun or was just playing the tactical side.
I was playing Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest in handheld mode and the menus were at the edge of overly complicated. One on side the human management, decide how many of a certain type of human laborers are available. Take out some that make food for those that get you winning wars. Move your men around too much and your people will starve or refuse to fight. A lot of planning, but on a small screen.
A great game, do not get me wrong, just nothing for me. I went in with an open mind, but before I knew it, I was complaining about the complexity and the lack of more casual gameplay. At times, I felt like the direction of this game was under par. Like I was just doing my own thing without any real guidance.
I also wonder if the type of game is not hurting the ability to enjoy it on a casual level. This game is in a very specific genre and I truly feel that if you have not spent hundreds of (enjoyed) hours in similar games, that this one might pass you by. Also the lack of what I like to call a graphical polish, is possibly a detractor for this game.
In conclusion, Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest is a tough nut as a game. It is a few year old game that got ported and even the original kind of looked like it was unpolished. I never saw this game as truly enjoyable, all just felt like a big chore to me. I dislike saying a game did not click with me, but Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest did not even do anything.
