Review: Among The Sleep

Welcome to our review of Among The Sleep, an eerie game in the first person horror genre.

In the nightmarish first-person horror game Among the Sleep, you play as a defenseless toddler, roaming around the house to find your missing mom.

In the enhanced edition of this award-winning first-person horror adventure, you step into the pajamas of a two-year-old child creeping through a dark and distorted house. Find your missing mother as you wander through sinister and surreal surroundings ranging from a haunting playground to a lakeside cottage, with only a teddy bear by your side for comfort. Will you survive long enough to unravel the family secret and make it to the end of this pitch-black nightmare?

Among the Sleep might be the most impressive approach to this genre on paper, you play as the toddler in search of his mom. The idea itself is highly unexpected and very much out there as an outside pretender to the crown as most special game out there. It is eerily out there and this is the enhanced version!

I was never lucky enough to play the original but I admit it had been on my radar before. I was simply in love with the idea but lack of free time and an excessive amount of traveling are mostly to blame for not being able to play this game any sooner. After a while, the game dropped from my radar due to other titles and before I knew it, it was no longer something I had in mind when buying or reviewing a new game!

Fast forward to around a few weeks ago, I found I was going to be able to play this game on my favorite console. It was getting released on Nintendo Switch! Gaming Boulevard got the review code and I just jumped up and down to get the chance to play this game. I played the game where I became a toddler in search of his mom.

It is my second birthday and mom treated me to a new toy teddy bear and some cake, boy, doesn’t everyone love cake! Shortly after, I was put to bed. Suddenly I woke up, everything was dark. I need to find my mom. So I set out to find her.

Having had a small tutorial that taught me how to walk and crawl around, I am able to perform all the needed tasks of a two-year-old! So back to my adventures in the dark… I try to get out of my crib, I succeed. I try to get out of my room, I succeed and before I knew it, I was in the washing room.

The washing machine is on, but there seems to be something wrong there. I try to make it stop, but I am not tall enough to reach the buttons. Maybe I should just unplug the electricity? Yes, that works! I open the washing machine and my teddy bear is right there, telling me something is wrong. This starts my adventure. I need to find my mom.

Among The Sleep is quite the impressive game not only in idea but also in execution. While it does not have the most awesome of graphics, the ones implemented in this game are very fitting. It creates a dark atmosphere and while walking and crawling around, you will thoroughly enjoy the eerie feelings of places like the house and the forest.

Among The Sleep is a very strong experience and while these dark games are not for all of us, I can just recommend to give it a try regardless. Having had a fun three hours of gameplay, the game did feel a little short, but I did not mind the shorter time, to be honest. Maybe the price point for the game is a little high though?

In conclusion, Among The Sleep lived up to my personal expectations and this blend between a toddler’s imagination and the weird nature of dreams, it has a special something that might not be for you, but it sure was fun for me!
