When you first start playing Wunderling, the game throws you a really funny curveball. The game looks exactly like any cheap rip-off from the famous Italian plumber series and this carrot man is the hero. But no, nothing like that really, the main gist is actually that the carrot dude is the enemy and you will become one of the enemies the aforementioned carrot man has defeated but given the magical powers to jump as well.

Basically, all you can do, which is very little, is jump up and down. By default, you are continuously going left to right and when you hit the end, you turn back and repeat. In itself, this is such an easy approach to the platforming genre, but much like the very beloved Jack’n Jill, the fun is all in the hidden side of the game. It is surprisingly quick to restart a level, no wasting time, endless retries, and well, you won’t even be mad when you fail a level for the …nth time. I speak out of personal experience, I just kept trying and trying and around 40 tries, I kid you not, later, I was through. I spent like 10 minutes on a single level and did not even mind.

That level has those speed tiles that double your speed and the game instantly becomes a rhythm game to jump in between ledges, avoid instant death from the spiked balls, and whatnot. A ballad of action and yet, nothing longer than half a minute really. The game is so beautiful in its game mechanics that I just had to sing a small serenade in its honor. I did not even get the review code for this game, but a friend loved it so much, he gifted it to me. Thanks, S!

In conclusion, despite its basic graphics and basic gameplay, this game is awesome. It proves the good old theory that great games do not rely on how pretty they are, but on how captivating they can be. This is a solid 9 out of 10 and a clear recommendation if you are in the market for a fast-paced platformer!
