My love for the Dragon Quest game has been well documented, even calling it my Game of the year 2 years ago. Even two years and four complete playthroughs later , I still stand by this point today. The history of this game is quite an unusual one as it came to PlayStation 4 first , then a definitive edition two Nintendo switch which included a 2D version of the game, this version now appearing on PlayStation 4 as well.
I will not go into great details on the story as I have written to prior reviews where you can read all about those details easily. What I will say is that I did things kind of differently this time. While I did have a regular playthrough of the game, I played it on the new PlayStation 5 which was a great improvement on loading times and also a noticeable upgrade on the graphics part.
I actually had someone in the house passed by while I was playing it and the first thing they said was: “damn, that is a pretty game!”. Comments like this are always making me smile when a drawn game gets this type of remark. Not to say that it didn’t look great in previous editions, no Sir, it just looked nicer.
Now the elephant in the room, does the game really provide an additional value compared to the other versions out there? Welcome and that is up to you to decide . For me personally I would say yes , being able to play it in full grandeur on my OLED TV , the switch picture quality simply does not compare…
I do think the addition of the 2D function might bring an added value as well, though it must be said that I personally prefer the 3D graphics an aside from players new to the game or avid fans like myself there might not be enough to warrant a second purchase of this game. But in all honesty if you don’t have this one in your collection , just buy it! This is quite possibly the best RPG you come out in years in my humble opinion.
In conclusion, it is hard to put rating on a game you’ve played four times already, adding up to at least 200 plus hours of gameplay, knowing the storyline almost by heart. I still stand by my original game of the year quote as it is that great. I am not changing my original perfect score, despite having played one too many hours of the game.
