Welcome to my review of Warhammer: Chaosbane, a game that I played the beta for long ago and now got to enjoy the full game. Out now on PS5!
In a world ravaged by war and dominated by magic, you must rise up to face the Chaos hordes. Playing solo or with up to four in local or online co-op, choose a hero from four character classes and prepare for epic battles wielding some of the most powerful artifacts of the Old World.
Warhammer: Chaosbane is redefining the Hack N’Slash genre as the 1st Action-RPG set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe. Roam the Old World in a universe of heroic fantasy with millions of fans, solo or in co-op, and fight hundreds of creatures in order to save the soul of Magnus, the last defender of the Empire of Man, from the menace of Chaos.
Drawing inspiration from the classics of the genre (Diablo 3, Grim Dawn, etc.), the game sets itself apart from traditional hack ‘n slashers by offering an intense gaming experience, dynamic gameplay mechanisms with lots of customization options, and high replay value.
So as I mentioned before, I played the Beta and I remember really liking it. A Warhammer game shaped like Diablo inspired game, right up my alley. At the time I played it on my PlayStation 4 on a 40-inch plasma. Now I got my hands on the review code for the full version, upgraded to PlayStation 5 and a 55 inch LG OLED. What can go wrong, right?
The first thing I noticed, is almost a boring remark but those graphics sure got one heck of an upgrade! Looking very crisp and so beautiful, this is what I always assumed the next generation would look like (about a month ago) and I am not disappointed yet. The bombastic graphics really suit a game like this where there is so much action on a single screen at all time.
The second thing I noticed is the DualSense controller. Throughout my gameplay of this game, I encountered a few rather peculiar yet really enjoyable features to be implemented. Take for example when you are near death, the controller starts beating like a heart in your hands. I cannot describe how great that felt the very first time. It was like I was actually holding a real heart.
Another thing I noticed from the controller, the way the shoulder buttons reacted and you could literally feel them tighten up at certain points in the game. This added level of touch is quite possibly the second-best of all the games I’ve played so far, basically, nothing beats Astro though.
It is really important to keep track of your armor and weapons as those clearly decide how easy or how tough a battle will be. one of my personal favorites is a spin slash that also damages those encircling you and allowing you to get out of a tight spot. Though I must say there are many that apply here, that instant dash to get out of harm’s way or straight into the action, just love it.
As I am a big Warhammer fan, I must also point out some of the bad things, just to make sure you are not thinking I am rating this game through my love for the series. The storyline is often strung together by a loose thread and I often felt that I should have a more quick way to move around towns. You do get tired of running from North to South and back again every interval you will encounter.
Another point I would like to mention, fully knowing this is a fantasy title, you cannot think too much about how the sewers are built, it is like the sewers art three times the size of the city yet the stairs to the above world are really close together, small details like that really crack me up.
In conclusion, Warhammer; Chaosbane was really fun and surely did not drop any balls and delivered a good quality experience.
