Hands-on: Transformers: Battlegrounds (Switch)

Welcome to our hands-on preview of the newest Transformers game called Battlegrounds, a tactical game out soon on Nintendo Switch!

As evil MEGATRON closes in on the Allspark, BUMBLEBEE and the Autobots need a new commander to help save Earth – you! Assemble your squad and roll out for a battle that will rage from Central City to Cybertron… and even to the local multiplayer arcade!

As this game is a tactical game, you know what to expect. Though it must be said it is not just an X-COM clone, I had the pleasure to play the capture the flag game and I did enjoy myself more than I originally planned. I will also say why I had this feeling, the original first few minutes, I honestly found the Transformers and Decepticons to be moving kind of marginally.

Pushing over some obstacles, like telephone booths and the like, the game seemed janky at first and I was not fully considering this game to become fun and enjoyable. That first impression is usually hard to beat, but it soon cleared up due to the game actually being smart in how it handles the enemies and an easy to use game mechanic.

I never had any real issues figuring out what to do in this classic capture the flag mode and before I knew it, I was already scoring my first flag. I loved how I was able to plan ahead, having part of my crew defending and the other attacking. It’s like I had been playing this game for a while and it all just made perfect sense. Much like how the perfectly presented dish in a restaurant fails when the components are not up to it.

Transformers: Battlegrounds is exactly that. In itself just a basic game with some design choices that I was rather skeptical about at first but ignored them along the way and adding in a gameplay that is easy to use and before you know it, it grabs you by the arm and pushes you forward.

While my hands-on time was limited, I was unable to play any of the other modes, I do look forward to playing them in the future when the game releases on Switch. And yes, this is despite myself being tired of the genre and just wanting to get some more time with this game.
