Review: Dungeons 3

Welcome to our review of the newly ported Dungeons 3, out now on Xbox!

At last, the Dungeon Lord has successfully united the forces of evil and established his dark empire. Time for the next step in his most diabolical quest: expansion!

Through enticing the dark elf priestess Thalya from the fluffy clutches of the surface world to become his chief lieutenant, the Dungeon Lord has found a way to direct his campaign of conquest from the confines of his underground lair. With Thalya on the front line, and the united forces of evil to support her, players will have to use every trick in the book to best those do-gooders of the overworld, once and for all!

Unleash your dark side by creating a unique underground dungeon from a huge array of rooms, traps, and structures. Raise the most terrifying army the world has ever seen, by choosing from despicable creatures such as orcs, succubae, zombies, and much, much more. Then, once you have built your forces, emerge from the darkness and guide your army to the light of the overworld, where you will corrupt the land and dispatch anything even vaguely heroic, cute, or unicorn-shaped. And in a first for the Dungeons series, experience randomly generated levels, so that no two sessions are alike – never-ending fun for any evil conqueror!

Dungeons 3 originally came out in 2017 and the review copy we got, it included all DLC. While in full disclosure we did not play everything, we did go through most of the game that we liked but not loved. In short, it has the usual issues that many games have if they were originally meant for PC.

In itself, Dungeons 3 is kind of atypical as you are the root of evil and not the handsome prince leading the armies against the forces of nature. No sir, you are commanding the evil underground troops in a real-time strategy that may reminisce most Dungeon Keeper players from olde.

A lot of the mechanics implied in this game rely on the gamer’s desire to do repetitive tasks and well, I did get kind of bored with some of them due to the fact that the controls played a little janky. Once I got things working, it did improve but not great though. The constant getting money to research stuff to expand my evil minion empire to get more evilness to in return use that, it got old soon.

Storywise, you got a more or less Hobbit story, a possessed girl in this case. It unfolds quite nicely as you go, I do recommend the game for lovers of the genre but for those among us that dislike chore-games, I would check some gameplay videos beforehand. The value for this title is great if you are into it. I estimate around 40 to 60 hours of gameplay depending on how deep into the lore you will go.

The one thing that I would like to mention when you are building your dungeons… Do keep in mind that this game is very balanced and that you should remember to properly balance your dungeon and do not forget to upgrade when possible. Your enemies will be stronger and tougher as it goes and you can not ignore this part….

In conclusion, Dungeons 3 may not be my cup of tea, but I do see how great it is for lovers of the genre. The value is massive and I still recommend it strongly!
