Rip apart your favourite demons to the core with DOOM Eternal’s “destructible demons” system and take your power fantasy to new levels.
DOOM Eternal is the direct successor to 2016’s DOOM, winner of The Game Awards’ Best Action Game of 2016. It comes to no surprise that everything is bigger, badder and more bloody from start to finish. DOOM Eternal is filled with more options than ever and it brings a lot to the table.
If you are still reading my review at this point, I will assume you know what DOOM is all about and the game can be called a natural successor in its genre and it excels at everything it does! This game is also very overwhelming as I did recall playing its predecessor, finishing it and never really rage quitting or getting my hands in my hair thinking I was stuck with no way out. Enter DOOM Eternal and its very intricate system of combining all the action and demon slaying with the skills to move around the place and figuring out where to go next.
Things are more violent than ever and even in the easiest of modes, you will get quite the challenge. Never impossible but the hardest of modes is now reserved for the die hard fans or the masochists. DOOM Eternal is just about properly balanced in my book, despite my own personal hardships and times that I put my PS4 to rest to take a breather, it just kept calling me, back into the slaughter.
The main mission of the game is to hunt down the demon priests and put an end to things. You go around trying to find them and unlocking tons of items, weapons and so forth. There are so many aspects to unlock, from better weapons that can be made even better through the means of upgrades. The suit can be made even better, prioritising health, ammo or armor.
Personally, I really enjoyed literally reading even the loading screens, they contain useful information like how some enemies have certain weak points and how to take advantage of those. Like shooting the gun on the back of one enemy to firing explosives into the mouths of others. While it is not always easy to perform said tasks, it sure helps if you are running low on resources.
Resources do run low the entire time, my advice is to take perfect control of those Glory Kill-mechanics so you reload your resources in the meantime. Nothing worse than seeing a small fleet of enemies inbound with only a handful of bullets, right? I learned this the hard way by getting smoked once too often in the beginning. I do still get killed way too often, but never do I consider the game to be anything but fun.
The dashing function is something I enjoy very much as well. Being able to dash my way out of trouble or just get that extra push to reach that ledge and prevent myself from falling to my death. There were times that I hated my lack of timing when I just got the ability but I did get used to it pretty quickly. I think it may be my favorite mechanic in a while. I often go around “dancing”in the sky because of it, shooting down enemies and going in for the kill.
As I mentioned before, there are some issues that I did not fully enjoy, the ways to progress sometimes can be complicated to say the least. Again, not saying they were impossible, but very much out there in the realm of giving its players a headache. To give you an example, there is one point where you need to jump into the abyss, while “falling down”, you will see a ledge which was previously out of view. Then you need to use your double jump/dash mechanics to the best of your ability and perform the near impossible. Despite being a big high when you finally succeed, it still can slow you down from the demon slaying rage.
In conclusion, DOOM Eternal is near perfect. It really is, so many things to do, amazing boss fights, die-hard mechanics to keep yourself from getting snuffed, … They only fear you!
