Niffelheim does one heck of a job to bring the atmosphere and experience to the Nintendo Switch. Everything you see and experience at first is a serious high, Graphically, Niffelheim is among the best games you will see out there and it truly delivers an impressive first impression.
Once you get to playing however is when the game falls short of being something remarkable and I would like to call it just barely above mediocre instead. Side-scrolling action, a lot of boring gathering of items and thankfully also dungeons and the sort filled with enemies.
Enemies that will get tougher as you go and even at first, they will deal some damage to your warrior. Nothing wrong with that if not for the lack of explanation or a basic tutorial. You are thrown straight into the game and despite having access to a written tutorial, I had my issues with the inventory at first and I dropped more items than I’d like to admit. Simply because it did not make sense how to use the menus…
I did enjoy the fighting aspect and the harvesting of animals, but that was not enough to really leave an impression. Niffelheim was pretty and long-winded. I am not dissing on the game, this was just my experience with it. I wish it was different, but it just did not do the trick to keep me thrilled to play on.
In conclusion, Niffelheim mostly owes this score to its amazing graphics and atmosphere, as a game, I was underwhelmed and just nothing got me interested to keep playing this game. The 5.5 is due to its graphics and if they had not been this great, I probably would have given a failing score.
