Indie Corner: Captain Cat

Welcome to our review of Captain Cat, a game out now on Nintendo Switch.

Captain Cat travels the seven seas in his boat, using his anchor as a hook to fish for the delights and treasures hiding at the bottom of the sea. But navigating the depths of unknown waters is never easy, there are many mysterious dangers to face along the way. Can Captain Cat overcome them to catch enough fish to satisfy his hunger?

Captain Cat is not that impressive as a game, sure it is fun to some extent, but you will mostly be bored playing this game. It just did not click with me at first, despite the premise of being a puzzle game.

Basically, you drop the anchor, that moves from lift to right and back again and when it points more or less at the direction you want it to, you let loose! Now repeat this all the way down to grab the fish, but not forgetting the collectibles along the way.

It sounds so incredibly easy but the anchor speed is quite high so you will experience at least somewhat of a challenge to really perfect the game. You can also immediately drop the anchor in the wrong place, restarting the level at hand.

There are warp points between places, curves in the sea rocks and so much more, in itself it is all very promising but the finish is just what made it boring. It felt like a game made for 5-year-olds and yes, it is rated E for Everyone. It just presents itself so badly.

Gameplay itself is mostly influenced by the speed of the anchor and not really by actual skills, most levels are so easy, it really bored me out. Captain Cat could actually be made better too in my humble opinion. The anchor mechanic could be changed to be either slower or purely static. It could be joined by multiple additional obstacles and be more a matter of skill rather than what we have now.

While I am not saying this game is bad in any way, it is just not entertaining. I am very sure that any young kid would gladly spend some time with Captain Cat, but me, an avid puzzle fan, I was not impressed and yes, I would go as far as say I was disappointed in this game. It just did not live up to its potential. As always I did try to find the most positive about the game, but alas, I was not able to thoroughly enjoy it after all.

In conclusion, Captain Cat fell short of my expectations due to its game mechanics and sadly that matters the most when defining whether or not a game is worth buying or not. Captain Cat is just a handful of bucks, so it is not that high priced, but is that really enough to be the main appeal of a game? Sadly Captain Cat was not for me but maybe it is something you will like?
