Indie Corner: StarDrone

Welcome to our review of StarDrone, a trippy new game out on Switch that has a pinball meets magnets feeling to it!

StarDrone is a high-speed action thriller with a mix of arcade action, pinball, and breakout.

In StarDrone, players pilot their Drones across the galaxy, collecting pieces of Equilibrix in order to restore the equilibrium of the universe and stop the evil G-Noids from taking over. However, this journey requires much more than star-gazing, as your Drone is constantly in motion and the more stellar matter you collect, the faster it will travel until you are moving at the speed of light. Along the way, key power-ups will earn you more points that will ultimately let you compete against the world on the StarDrone scoreboards.

StarDrone takes a while to get used to. My first few plays, I sucked so hard that it made me want to rage quit. I had seen a clip on youtube and this guy made this game look so damn easy. The disappointment in my own skills was the very first thing that dawned upon me while playing. Was I really that bad all of a sudden?

No, this StarDrone game is just hard to perfect but after a while, you get used to its mechanics and become more and more able to really shine in the levels. So how does it play? Quite “easily”! (pardon the pun) Your StarDrone needs to stay alive and collect the stellar matter. you fly in the direction you decide to. Your guidance beam is the direction and your timing will make it fly perfectly or you will be off to a bumpy ride.

You will slowly learn the skills of abusing the tractor beam to swerve around the space you are facing and will be zig zagging like the best in no time. The hardest part is to survive the initial few levels. They were so infuriating that I often felt like quitting. I did push through, I did get better at the game and I did end up enjoying it a little bit more.

Now mind you, this game is gorgeous and does play the way it was intended to. It is clear from the start that this trippy game mechanic is right there for you to get used to and you will easily rake in the high scores.

However, I would not recommend it to everyone. During my gameplay, I did not feel like this was anything more than a showcase of the graphics and a game that in my opinion fell short of my expectations. Just so many things could improve this game and it disappointed me a little. When I thought about writing my review, I kept thinking it missed real action. In itself, StarDrone is a slow paced game and I would have loved more to be done.

In conclusion, StarDrone fell short of my personal expectations and despite my fun at the end, the overall experience was disappointing, to say the least.
