Review: Left Alive

Welcome to our review of Left Alive, a game where you need to use your best stealth skills in order to stay alive.

LEFT ALIVE™ is a brand-new survival action shooter available now on PlayStation®4 and STEAM®.

Veteran developers, Toshifumi Nabeshima (director, Armored Core series), Yoji Shinkawa from KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS (character designer, METAL GEAR SOLID series), and Takayuki Yanase (mech designer, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Xenoblade Chronicles X) join forces to create LEFT ALIVE’s dark and gritty world.

LEFT ALIVE tells a human story of survival from the perspective of three different protagonists during the devastating invasion set in war-torn Novo Slava in 2127.

Experience the massive power gap between man and machine in pulse-pounding encounters: face off against powerfully armed troops, armored vehicles, and towering mechs.

Choose your playing style: engage in frenetic gun battles or dispatch your enemies with stealth and wit. Set traps, collect and craft consumables to survive while exploring a devastated city ravaged by the atrocities of war.

Uncover the full story behind the war through the eyes of three different characters: as you progress through the game, experience multiple story paths each requiring bold decisions with desperate consequences.

With a great pedigree of developers behind this game, you would clearly expect a game on the upper echelon of the scale, interesting and amazing gameplay, well, that is not always the truth.

Left Alive is basically a hard game that only shines in one aspect, the one where they added a variety of items to use, but none of them really do the trick of making this game stand out. If anything, it is kind of underwhelming.

When I started playing this game, the lack of a clear tutorial annoyed me. The tutorial in this game is basically non-present aside from a few lines now and then, but nothing really teaches you to move and do stuff. I had emptied my bullet clip without actually seeing a real enemy go down.

Then I caught on fire, not knowing what to do to put out the fire. Spoiler, just walk away from the fire instead of trying to push all your buttons resulting in wasting even more items.

I got killed by an enemy at one point while being behind a car. Not joking. I was careful enough, I had taken out the one in sight by hitting him multiple times on the head with a leaden pipe after sneaking up on him from behind.

Everything about this game screams Metal Gear but like a bad attempt to copy it. Despite its cool graphics and ideas, the actual gameplay was not something I would recommend to others and to be fair, I was playing at the easiest of settings.

Another thing worth mentioning, this game is 12 gigs in size, but the DLC scores an impressive 22, so while I am sure many among you will adore this game, it failed to impress me. Sure, being able to figure out how to kill that one specific enemy when you have no bullets left, that is loads of fun, but the inconsistencies and the weird choices sometimes, they catch you off guard in a bad way.

Now, not all was bad, I did enjoy the graphics and the tense feeling that was present in this game, you just know and fully experience the excitement at first in the game, but once the realization sets in that this game is a little flawed (and I am being kind here), it is a set back.

In conclusion, Left Alive promises a lot of stealth and survival action but delivers only a badly balanced game with some mechanics that will only make you frown.
