Welcome to our review of Goosebumps: The Game, a spooky point and click adventure where you need to do your best to stay alive!
The walk home from school today is going to be a lot spookier than usual… Your sleepy neighborhood’s been overrun by monsters! Werewolves prowl the woods, Gnomes roam underfoot, and scarecrows walk at midnight. But these aren’t ordinary monsters—they’re R.L. Stine’s famous Goosebumps monsters, released from their books and looking to wreak havoc!
You’ll need to use your wits to investigate the surroundings, puzzle out clues, and outsmart the monsters before it’s too late! Survive a trek through your neighborhood, unravel the mysteries of the Dead House, and sneak through the mall after hours; only then can you confront Slappy and stop his plans for revenge!
Goosebumps: The Game is sadly not the best point and click adventure, but it does deliver a decent enough experience. What stands out most in this game, it’s not the actual story but the way it is presented. This game is a kind of fun spooky. Released at the right time of year, this is not a jump scare game, but a cute scare game. Nothing you will see will really scare you, but the atmosphere throughout the game is still spooky. They did a very nice job on this. Sadly it is also the only part of the game that also really stands out.
Though I must say, when you die, you instantly being able to restart where you left off, that was a nice and very welcome surprise too, but that is more a game design choice rather than have anything to do with the game itself. A game which has some impressive graphics that are harmless yet spooky nonetheless.
The game mechanics themselves are the typical point and click ones. The Switch takes us to the level of being able to use your finger for full control, though if you play the game, do use the left Joy-Con for moving around, it is way more comfortable and shows certain passages you might not see at first. This is actually one of the first clues given in the game and it is the most important one in my humble opinion as it makes your life in the game a lot easier.
There are some fun techniques in the game, it is not all boring really, you can get clues. You respawn instantly, you need to keep your wits about. Like when you meet the old lady in what is supposed to be your house. Answer her questions the wrong way and you die. Keep talking to her for too long and she falls asleep, allowing you to explore the room she is in. You got a serious case of trial and error going on, but the instant respawns take away the difficulty out of the game. All comes down to finding the clues to advance in the game and avoid death.
T, however, however is not really fun. Often I find myself thinking that I am not fully enjoying myself. Sure, this game has a lot of cool things going on. But deep down, I am not really having fun and that is okay, it really is. I just can not say this game is the best point and click out there. It is not giving me a fluid experience and at times is a little boring.
In conclusion, Goosebumps: The Game has its ups and downs, sadly enough the overall feeling is the down side. Nostalgia might be why I upped the score to 6…
