Indie Corner: Bug Butcher

Welcome to our review of Bug Butcher, a fast-paced bug control game in a 2D environment. Shoot the bugs to advance!

A fast-paced action shooter inspired by the arcade classic Super Pang! Use a wide selection of weapons and power-ups to tear through increasingly challenging levels. The Bug Butcher is an action-packed 2D side-scrolling shoot’em up game where peril comes from above.

So in a nutshell, pest control with machine guns in space. The core mechanics hold old ties from the classic arcade shooter “Super Pang” where you shoot vertically, but with modern-day twists. You are Harry, a brash and tenacious exterminator who has a knack for decimating bugs.

Bug butcher reminded me a little of Pirate Pop Plus too, also out on Nintendo Switch, the same mechanics of shooting upwards to destroy the enemies, but instead of a more monochrome setting, Bug Butcher is a very modern looking game with fascinating enemies and often very strong attack patterns.

The strength of this game lies in its quick pace and very intense battles, though you may not experience those at first, they will sooner or later become a habit. At first, there is a small tutorial, which is nothing more than shooting down some easy targets, but it gets the job done!

The game itself slowly builds up from very easy to incredibly hectic. Adding in more guns and obstacles. Not to forget a ton of new enemies. It might even go all out frantic way too soon. At around level 10 is when I started to get a cramp in my finger from all the firing.

Sure, I could just hold down my finger, but in games like these, I tend to prefer full control. Only when it got too much, was I holding down the button. At one point around 50 enemies just swarmed the screen at once and luckily there were ports on the left and right to keep them all from flooding my part in the middle.

Once I set off my special attack, which froze everything down, I was able to take out one side completely and advance to the next level. Something I had not succeeded in before that gameplay.

Freezing everything down, however, was not my favorite special attack, there are quite a few and I especially loved the one where I was holding a laser that just took out everything it touched. Sadly that one does not take a long time to be active, so keep your finger at the trigger.

While this game might set itself apart on the graphics side, it does look very cool and the enemies scary. In the end, it is just another one in a line up of games that all are based upon the very same old Super Pang. Great looking but well playing though!

In conclusion, as much as this may be based upon Super Pang, it does deliver a fun experience and some intense action.
