Indie Corner: In Between

Welcome to our review of the trippy yet hard puzzler called In Between! Out now on Nintendo Switch.

In Between is an atmospheric, award-winning platformer where you solve mind-bending puzzles by manipulating your surroundings and gravity itself.

In Between is set inside the mind of a man hit by a cruel twist of fate. Together you are on a journey through the protagonist’s head, a world that doesn’t obey the laws of physics. Free your mind and defy gravity in more than 60 compelling and unique puzzles, requiring all your wits and agility.

As you follow the protagonist stumbling through the stages of accepting his own mortality, new mechanics are introduced. Each stage offers unique gameplay reflecting the emotions that surface when the protagonist copes with his fate.

Every human has a story to tell. But you never know when the story ends. Be invited to learn about the protagonist’s life and his struggle for a happy ending. In Between features interactive story sequences and a profound narrator immersing you into a life of downfalls and moments of happiness.

I would describe just about 5 puzzles in this game to be easy, the rest varying from hard to very hard to damn near demonic. In In Between, you move around a 2D place but you can defy gravity and use your dimensional jump to avoid traps and your early demise. Luckily there is no roguelike element to this game or it might have killed my switch from “accidentally” being thrown into the wall.

As you need to use every bit of all the area around you, prepare to do a lot of experimenting and falling to your death, but it is all okay, it allows you to hear the intense storyline in between every few levels. Though mind you, they were but a distraction for me, not at all interested in the story when you just want to tackle the next level.

The more levels you end up beating, the exponentially harder this game becomes too. At first, it is all about flying through the obstacles, but suddenly… Suddenly you have floating platforms, flying enemies, …

The worst enemy of mine, the darkness. Only when facing the darkness, will it not come closer. Touch it and you die. Now imagine that coming from both sides and suddenly, this becomes a game of skill and speed. How many times I accidentally hit the wrong thumbstick and flew straight into it… Ah, the nightmares I had about this game, I admit I loved the very high challenge level, but it might be too much for some.

That is exactly the biggest problem of the game, it becomes too hard too soon. It does not give you more time to slowly adapt to new skills or enemies or new features, you shall and must adapt instantly. This was clearly done on purpose when you play the game, but for some casual gamers, this might backfire and may become a game they dislike.

In between is a classic example where a demo would really help the game out. Like, give gamers the chance to play the first few levels and make them live the game themselves. Most gamers go and read reviews like the ones we have up here on Gaming Boulevard. But actually playing it, that is so much more valuable.

My opinion is that a review is and will always just be one persons’ opinion and in this case, it is mine. You should not take my words as gospel, I have my own likes and dislikes, just sharing how I feel, is why I do this. I get great satisfaction from playing all these marvelous games and it is totally fine if anyone disagrees with me. This is only natural. I liked the game, but thought the game was a little steep on the difficulty level. Do I recommend it? I actually do, despite this.

In Between brings a very unique idea with a twisted way to play to the Nintendo Switch and yes, it deserves a fair chance of becoming your next purchase on the eShop!

In conclusion, it may be too hard for some, but only the persistent will really see it to the end! My rating is 80%
