Review: Apex Construct for PSVR

Apex Construct is a Virtual Reality game which I have tested on Playstation VR. When getting into the game at first, you learn how to pick stuff up and interact with various objects. This made me think a little bit of Job Simulator, which is a very good thing, the way you interact with things in VR is really what makes or breaks a game. To move around you have to use the teleport mechanism, which is a bit weird if you’re not used to it but start to feel OK when you get a bit further into the game.

You start off by hearing a voice, this “person” explains that he woke you up and you have to help him defeat another evil being that is out to kill you. While waking you up he had an accident which resulted in you losing your hand. No worries though, he replaced it with a bionic hand.

You get to call this voice Father, the enemy is called Mother. Father helps you with a few more basics of the game like combat. The combat system is a bit strange at the start but works quite well. You have a bow and arrows with which you shoot the evil robots. Your special bow also has a shield that you can activate to block incoming projectiles from the hostiles.

You have to start the story with protecting yourself from Mother by making your house a safe place. You need to find a power source to turn on a sort of cloaking device for your house which will make it invisible and unfindable to Mother. However, you can clearly see by some glitches in the edges of the maps that you are in fact in some kind of simulation world and not in fact in the real world.

When you go on your missions to find the things you need to protect yourself you will find some clues suggesting that maybe Father isn’t who he says he is. Mother suggests that you might not be the first person to have been awoken by Father. A little later you will find out that Father and Mother are in fact AI’s and not real persons. While going on missions in a building that was used to build a body for Father but failed in doing so and was abandoned. You find another hand just like your own next to a bow just like your own. This of course suggests that maybe Mother was right, and Father was in fact holding this back from you. Anyway, you find what you need and return home to work on your cloaking device.

Apex Construct is easy to get into and really fun to play, the story bears some mystery and that urged me to play more and find out what was really happening in this game. The controls with the Playstation Move controllers handled really well and weren’t too awkward as is the case in some other VR games. You get to play while standing up or sitting down, as you prefer, and both work greatly. When aiming with the bow and interacting with objects in this VR world you will need some space around you. I did notice that the Move controllers got out of the play zone very often which made me have to reposition my character a lot to get to things which seemed close enough to reach.

This game is without doubt one of the better VR games I’ve played. It was a fun experience and really feels good to play. The game is out on PlayStation right now and will release the 20th of march on Steam to play on the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. If you are looking for a fun and immersive game to play on your VR headset, this is definitely a game to check out. There are still a few aspects that can improve this game greatly but all in all it’s a good game. That’s why I will give this game a score of

7/10
