Killer Instinct is finally back and as an Xbox One launch title. The initial reveal was met with mixed responses. It’s on a console with a rough first impression and after bad reports of a certain site that the game was free to play and lastly being developed by a dev whose track record was anything but good. Killer instinct seems destined to fail commercially and critically. And now that all the DLC is out it’s time to take a look at it.
I’m afraid your path ends here.
Killer instinct doesn’t have much plot, It’s a fighting game. You go into arcade mode and fight 8 random opponents after each other with Fulgore as the final boss. After beating Fulgore players will get one of three endings. This is a feature that returns from Killer Instinct 2(Gold). Depending on who you perform an ultra on or not you will get an evil(bad), neutral or good ending. The endings are just stills with characters set in a certain pose so don’t expect an animated or CGI ending. The endings are pretty cool but much like most games the story mode isn’t a reason to return to Killer Instinct. What is a good reason to return to Killer Instinct is the gameplay.
While the story mode is nothing special the multiple endings might encourage the player to try and unlock them all.
C-C-C-Combo Breaker.
Killer Instinct is a six button fighter but with a twist. You have a light, medium and heavy kick and punch but in order for you to do combo’s you need to follow a certain process. This process begins with an opener, a jump attack or certain special moves that when it connects allows the player to continue to the next part which is auto’s or manuals. When pressing any button the character will do automatically do two attacks time it right and your character will do only one hit which is a manual that is harder to break. When an opponent is opened up the process becomes a routine of doing auto’s or manuals directly followed by linkers which are certain special attacks. You can continue this combo until either you drop your combo, you fill up the combo bar that automatically drops the combo to prevent infinites from happening, the opponent breaks the combo or you do more damage you finish with an ender which again is a certain special move. It’s important to end combos because during the combo all damage you do isn’t definite if you don’t end your combo the opponent’s health will slowly return. This might all sound super complicated but what it basically amounts to is doing a special move, hitting a button, doing a special again and rinse and repeat until you do an ender. auto’s and manuals will be a certain power and speed depending on which button is pressed. Lights do low damage but are fast and harder to break, hards do most damage but are slow and easy to break. In order for you to break an opponent’s combo you need to see which version of an auto or manual the opponent is doing(slow, medium or hard) and press the two corresponding buttons. But your opponent can counter your combo breaker and continue. And this is where of a higher level Killer Instinct gets really fun. The guessing game get’s strong and the pressure of your opponent breaking or countering the breaker is enormous. Do you breaker does your opponent know when you break and do you let him counter nothing so you can get in and continue your combo. The mind levels go deep in this game and that’s a huge part of Killer Instinct so much fun. Other than that there are Ultra combos, shadow moves wich are your EX moves and another interesting aspect called instinct. Each character has an Instinct meter that fills up during the fight. Once full players can “pop” their instinct which means their character gets a serious buff of some sorts. Thunder can dash through opponents as a murder of crows or Glacius gets armor which allows him to get hit once not take damage and he doesn’t flinch. Instinct mode is a great new addition that more games should have as they shake things up. A close and aggressive Sabrewulf won’t rush in as fast when Glacius has armor or a Jago that popped instinct might back up and zone it out. This is what makes this mechanic so much fun as they change the flow on the get-go. Killer Instinct is an incredibly fun game that people will certainly enjoy.
The game looks great and the number of particles can be hypnotizing.
The best launch game this generation.
Killer Instinct is a real looker. While the character models and such looks great what is amazing to see is the amount of particle effects on the screen sometimes, it’s crazy. It will remind a lot of people of Dead Or Alive 4 on the Xbox 360 which was a launch title and had some interesting hair tech that now looks kind of goofy and weird. It feels like within the next or even this generation people will look at this and think the same of it since the particles litter the screen. It’s a good way to show the Xbox One’s power but a bad way to play sometimes. The stages look amazing with special shout-out’s going to the Thunder and Spinal stage. Both look amazing and aesthetically have some cool things going on. The music in the original Killer Instinct is cheesy 90’s goodness and many still enjoy it because of it. So the new Killer Instinct has a lot to live up to. Luckily Composer Mick Gordon not only manages to keep up but also to surpass the legendary soundtrack. The music is perfect for Killer Instinct and in a way feels like a sequel to the original in theme. It has a strictly 2013 vibe to it. All themes are covered from Metal to Dubstep to Violin oriented music. Also Mayor props for getting the original themes remaster into the game as Easter egg. The UI however while not bad feels kind of generic as if someone took the fire template and stuck it on there. It works to some degree but the amounts of red taking up the screen is kind of ridiculous. Another nice thing is that players can give their character not only colors but extra costume parts giving a more personal feeling to the character. Killer Instinct overall is a looker.
The menu UI is a bit basic but the rest is gorgeous.
One of the most fun fighter in recent years.
Closing note:
Killer instinct is an amazing game that while a bit barebone is so much fun. The Combo Breaker Counter Breaker system is great and the opener linker ender system feels good and looks stylish. The Stages are amazing and the music on them even more so. The instinct system is a game changer that more games need. Killer instinct is amazing not only for a launch game but on a whole. Props to Double Helix for cleaning up their act.
