Top Ten: Favorite Swords

Swords, let’s talk about them. There are many different kinds of swords. Big, small, straight, curved even sharp and blunt. Now it’s time for me to look at what I personally think are the best video game swords. There are a lot of familiar ones and even some you wouldn’t have thought of. So with that said let’s go.

#10:Ashbringer(World Of Warcraft)

So when talking Warcraft, people will automatically think Frostmourne. But what can be better than the legendary sword? Well, how about the sword that destroyed it. The Ashbringer. This sword has a big history. During a battle, Alexandros Mograine noticed a powerful Orc Warlock who was just decimating troop left and right. After the Orc was killed Alexandros collected the dark crystal which gave the Orc that power. After a whole lot of stuff happened and the crystal was converted to a light crystal with light energy, it was given to the grieving Dwarven King to forge a blade. The king did so and made the finest sword he ever made and imbued it with his hatred for the Skourge. After one of Alexandros’ sons killed him with the sword the weapon itself got corrupted just like the crystal until eventually being purified and used to destroy the Frostmourne and ending the dreaded sword’s reign. OOFFHH that was a lot of history. What makes this sword so cool to me aside from its rich history; this sword has this cool medallion floating in it first as a palm and then with a cool skull. It’s a cool sword with a rich history.

Shout-outs go to Frostmoure which got its ass handed to it by Ashbringer.

ashbringerMan look at that blade. I like a sword that gets influenced by its user.

#9:Energy Sword(Halo series)

Now, this sword first appeared in Halo Combat Evolved. When the player approached a yellow Elite they would pull out one these bad puppies. However once you killed him and approached the sword, it would blow up. It’s just such a cocktease. Luckily when killing an Elite they would drop the sword and, this time, you could pick it up. And let me tell you, just about everything about this sword is amazing. The sound and animation when you whip it out. The way you lunge when you attack, The design. It has everything. 8-man free-for-all with only energy swords is a blast, intense and goofy to booth. Now if only I could wield two at once.

energy sword
Everyone who saw you with puppy just tried to get the hell away from you.

#8:Kingdom Key(Kingdom Hearts)

So this might be the bluntest sword on the list. As a matter a fact, it kinda has more in common with a bat than a sword. Nonetheless, the weapon is called KeyBLADE and when it’s used it’s used as a sword. The Keyblade is surprise surprise, also a key. The Kingdom Key is mostly wielded by Sora and might be the most recognizable sword on the list due to its design. It has the ability to lock and unlock anything it’s wielder wants. There’s this game I play when I go to conventions and that’s to try to see more keyblades than a friend. It’s a popular and iconic weapon that’s one of gaming’s most recognizable items ever.

keybladeYeah I don’t think that “blade” can cut anything Sora.

#7:Transistor(transistor)

The next sword looks like a USB stick. And that’s partly because it is. When Red first finds the sword it’s stuck in a man and the sword itself asks to be pulled out of him. The sword has the ability to absorb the souls of dead people and that’s how it gets new skills. The sword accompanies the mute Red and acts as a narrator throughout the entire game. Its abilities are cool but what makes it a winner to me is, along with its voice, the design. It looks cool and stylish, lights up when talking and has that red Eyeball-like thing near the hilt. It’s a cool looking sword with a cool voice and cool abilities. I guess you can say this sword is…
Neat.

transistorYou know, there’s something nice about being able to talk with the thing you use to viciously murder things with.

6#:Blood Berry(No more Heroes)

Now this weapon is almost cheating. Even though I can’t use the Lightsaber since it’s cheating I will use the next best thing. Blood Berry is the first Beam Katana Travis Touchdown uses in No More Heroes. There are several Beam Katanas in the series I decided to go with the one that you start off the game with. This swords history isn’t as flashy as some of the other swords on this list like it being passed on from a dying man or being found stuck in a pedestal it’s a story worth telling. He bought it from an online auction…that’s it. Nothing flashy just bought it online. The sword works like a Lightsaber but it makes a bit more sense. While Lightsabers would just kinda stop at a certain length for no reason(something that strangely always bothered me) you can see how the Blood Berry works. Once it’s turned on, its spiky tip expands and two points connect the light beam together. It’s a sword that can cut trough almost anything but is very low on energy. what do you have to do to recharge it? Well uhh… It’s kinda like.. uhh,. it’s like jacking off your sword. Seems like a perfectly fitting way to charge the thing considering who’s using it. Plus points if you’re playing the Wii version…

beam katanaYou can do it, Travis. Charge up that sword like your life depends on it.

#5:Honedge(Pokemon X/Y)

Now’s time for a Pokemon. Honegde is a sentient sword that when touched drains their enemy’s life force by its blue hand-like ribbon. So what does Honedge have above other swords on this list? Well, first of all it’s a Pokemon and as such it’s like a pet. A pet that can cut motherfuckers up real good. It also has more abilities than any other sword on the list. It can fire strong beams and spectral energy spheres, it can create shock waves, use its shadow to attack, poison enemies, make it rain and make it sunny among a list of many, many things. Yeah you don’t want to mess with anyone who has this sword at their side.

Shout-outs go to Honedge’s whole evolution line.

honedgeWith its wide arrange of moves and sentience this is one of the most powerful swords on the list.

3:Buster Sword(FF7)

So what needs to be said about the one and only Buster Sword. Well for one the Buster Sword is the poster boy for the term Big Fucking Sword. A better description for it would be a slab of raw iron. The sword also carries with it the weight of death and tragedy. The blade doesn’t stay in the same hands for too long, it seems to be passed on to a successor while the previous owner is dying. Its design and size are known by everyone and the way Cloud wields it nowadays is almost hypnotic. The slow and heavy hits make it clunky and very un-elegant but so much more brutal and satisfying. Anyone how can even lift the sword up is not someone you want to fight with.

Shout-outs go to all-around unlikeable, Squall’s Gunblade.

buster swordSeriously how does he wield that thing? It’s massive.

#3:Soul Edge(Soul Calibur series)

Even though the series of the games is called Soul Calibur, it’s really about Soul Edge. The evil sword covered in meat and veiny stuff can adapt its shape to what its wielder suits most. Its origins is Bezerk-esque in its darkness and bruteness. Soul Edge started off as just an ordinary sword that, after being filled with murder and hatred for countless of ages, turned into a semi-sentient sword with a dark and demonic soul. Every wielder eventually falls under the control of the sword with Cervantes and Siegfried being the two most known victims. Eventually, the soul in the sword took control of Siegfried’s armor and is the version of Nightmare we know now. The ability to take control of its users and its history makes it the most iconic swords in the series.

And give it up for Soul Calibur itself.

soul edgeCreated from darkness this sword is the most metal sword ever. Even if it’s mostly covered in flesh.

#2:Master Sword(Zelda series)

So actually, this wasn’t my original choice because that would have gone to either the Biggoron sword or the Fierce Deity Sword considering its design and power. But then I thought where the Master Sword has been and I switched back to it. And what I mean with where the Master Sword has been, all the ways it brutally murdered Ganondorf. The sword has stabbed the Gerudo King right in the stomach and later RIGHT TROUGH HIS HEAD. After the latter, he turns to stone and is never heard from again. The sword is also called The Blade Of Evil’s Bane which is the coolest name you can give a sword. As for powers, it can shoot beams of light and is the key to the sacred realm. In fact, when Link pulls the sword from its pedestal he gets frozen in time and only awakens seven years later. Truly THE legendary video game swords.

Shout-outs go to the Biggoron Sword and the Fierce Deity Sword of course.

master swordMan Ganondorf has it rough.

#1:(Xenoblade Chronicles)

It’s the legendary god-sword. When the player first sees the Monado it’s being wielded by the ginormous titan Bionis. The blade looks a bit different from when we see it wielded in the hands of Shulk, being made out of pure light. However when we see it in the hands of the main character of the game it sports a sleek red and blue color pattern and a nice round design. The Monado is the only sword that can cut trough the Mechon, a violent race of robotic monsters while being unable to hurt human beings. The divine blade takes it toll on the user actually paralyzing the previous user’s arm. With Shulk however not only is he fine but the sword mysteriously gives him the ability to look into the future among many other things. Now a sword that can look into the future, what’s better than that? Nothing. That’s why it’s my number one.

monadoIts design is great and its powers unparalleled. If that’s not #1 worthy then I don’t know what is.

And that’s that. Probably not really what you were expecting but that’s just my opinion. There are a lot of swords out there and picking ten was pretty hard to do. If you think you know better than let me know in the comments. And come back next month for a new top ten about something else. What? Well, you’ll have to wait and see.
