Review: Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat is finally out and after some time we know just how good this game is.

Check out the review below.

Who’s next?

Mortal Kombat is back and gorier than ever. The fist thing you’ll notice about MKX is its variations.

Every character has three variations which you can select before the match. But what do these do? Well variations give variation(urg) to your play style. It means for every character you have, you have three different versions; each with their own special moves, normals or another gimmick. This means that one strategy against outlaw Erron might not work on gunslinger Erron or selecting ninjitsu Scorpion will give you swords which give you that extra bit of reach you needed while inferno Scorpion will get a demon to summon which allows for good pressure even from far away. These variations also change the appearance slightly. This means one character is now basically divided into three different characters.

Another new addition is the Stamina meter which will deplete by doing several things like back-dash and interacting with the stage. Management of this meter is really important, it makes sure you don’t back-dash too much or allows you to get in close with the opponent to continue combos. The stamina meter is one of the most interesting additions, it makes sure you think of how to start the match and makes sure you only back dash when absolutely necessary.

Mortal Kombat X is the first Mortal Kombat which I feel like I can understand on a more complex level. With the new additions it feels like you can really learn something which I felt the other games lacked, they always felt kinda clunky and slow. The game plays and feels really smooth.

Hands down the best Mortal Kombat ever made.

One of the interesting things about MKX is that people actually got excited about the story mode. No one would have ever said “Oh I’m curious about what will happen in the story of this fighting game.” But now a bunch of people were saying it, and with good reason. Mortal Kombat’s story mode is still the best story mode you will ever find in a fighting game. There is a tremendous amount of production value in the cut scenes.

The story mode follows a simple pattern: cut scene, someone says something about someone’s mother,Ready Fight and a new cut scene starts. While it doesn’t sound like much it is really fun to see what’s going to happen next.

That being said, I feel like MKX was really short, I finished the game in well under four hours. And most characters don’t really get their time to shine or closure. For instance, Kenshi and Takeda have a scene in which Kenshi explains to Takeda the things he did and why he did them, with at the end of the cut scene Kenshi saying they will do some “father-son activities” but they never did. Another thing is that Kotal Khan shows up near the end but it is never shown what happens to him. Most of the story feels like it’s missing huge parts. One thing I am not to fond of either is in the story mode you fight several characters which are not even playable despite them being as good as finished. this happens at least 4 different times and feels like a slap in the face of the fans of the characters. “Here they are fightable in the game but not playable.”

So All-around it’s good but it feels like huge parts are missing and I think MK9’s story was better.

Gods, portals, flying demons, blind guys with magic swords.

Outside of the core fighting in MKX is a lot of neat goodies and attention to detail.

Every Intro is unique and the characters all say something different to each other. This gives the game a lot more personality than it already had.

As for extra modes, Test Your Luck is still one of the best things in any fighting game. In test your luck you  spin a wheel which will decide what random mutators will be activated. Things can get really crazy with you falling asleep at random times while your opponent has unlimited stamina but can’t use specials while health drops from the sky together with the occasional iceball. Test your luck will give for hours of casual crazy fun.

It seems like the traditional challenge tower from MK9 is gone and replaced with several towers with a specific theme like only female characters or your health will be drained. It’s not that they are bad it’s just that the original tower was really fun and challenging.

Then there is the Krypt which might as well be a mobile game on itself. In the previous game you went to the krypt to buy concept art, music and alternate costumes. But now the krypt evolved into it’ own mini-game in which you explore a graveyard to buy stuff off and occasionally fight off a surprise enemy or have to solve a puzzle. Puzzles can actually get kinda clever. you see four handles to open a gate but don’t know the combination, so you go back trough the hallway you went in on and see that the shadows behind a fire spell out the combination. The krypt could seriously have been a mobile game.

But now here is the bad part: the online. It’s not good, the online runs at best okay and at worst kinda okay. Any good match I had still had button delay’s so trying to do combos is nearly impossible. the good thing was that the worst matches ran about the same with here and there a second of stuttering. maybe you will have better luck but now it just doesn’t work like it’s supposed to. It also takes ages for a match to be found.

What online feature does work and is really cool is your Faction. At the beginning of the game you have to choose from 5 factions for which you will fight. the faction will give you access to two unique fatalities called Faction kills. As you play you will earn faction points to help your faction rise to the top. A neat little detail is that your menu changes depending on the faction you chose.

Oiv’e studied oll yar moves SONYA!

Closing note:

All in all Mortal Kombat X is the best MK game ever. It has cool features, graphically and animation-wise its top-notch (with the exception of some shadows being pixelated and jagged). For the first time in Mortal Kombat history the music is noticeable and fits perfectly.

The online is a mess and there are some shady things going on with the DLC but other than that it’s almost the full package.

If you like fighting games go right now and pick this up.

And if not Mortal Kombat is one of the most enjoyable fighters on a casual level.
