Review: Kirby Triple Deluxe

Nintendo’s cute little pink blob is back for a brand new adventure on the Nintendo 3DS. It’s the first Kirby game for the system and it has a lot to offer. The game is more than your regular Kirby game, when you buy Triple Deluxe, you buy three games for the price of one. Although not all are that great to play, it’s a great deal in the end.

The Story mode.

The Story mode is the main part of the game and is the mode most Kirby fans will love to play. The Story is about King Dedede’s mysterious disappearing and the loss of Kirby’s cute little house. It’s up to the cute pink blob to go on an adventure through several levels in order to keep up with the King.

Just like old times, Kirby is able to gain special powers when he swallows his enemies. Most of the transformations got a little update so they offer a little more variation and feel more powerful. There’s way more variation in the attacks this time so a new transformation really feels like something unique and awesome to achieve. Aside of the little adjustments in some of the old transformations, Kirby is also able to transform into to new Whip-, Archer-, Circus-, Beetle-, Leaf-, Spear- en Bell-Kirby. There’s a total of over 20 different transformations so the game never gets old.

A completely new and powerful transformation is the ‘Hypernova’. The Hypernova won’t get activated by swallowing an enemy, you can only turn Hypernova when you eat a special bean. In Hypernova mode, Kirby won’t transform into a new character but will change his pink color into a set of different bright colors. When you’re in Hypernova, you’ll be able to suck up massive objects and really destroy everything that’s in your path. In the first levels this Hypernova is used to show off the power of the bean but in the later levels you’ll need the Hypernova power to solve some very intriguing puzzles.

Aside of the transformations Kirby also got some new moves such as the ability to dodge an attack. This new move offers a different style of playing compared to the other games in the franchise.

A classic platform game.

All of those transformation powers are what make a Kirby game so different from other Nintendo platform games. If you take away the transformations, Kirby Triple Deluxe is a rather basic platform game but with enough innovations to keep it fun.

One of the biggest changes is that you’ll be able to hop into the background when you find a special portal. This extra 3D-layer was also found in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Kirby uses it in the same way. Enemies and objects are also able to hop between the background and foreground. This mechanism results in interesting puzzles and also offer a more challenging game in the end.

A great Kirby game with a lot of variation.

Fans of the franchise will be pleased to know that this game isn’t that easy. The first levels and bosses are rather easy to complete but the more you’ll advance in the story mode, the harder the game gets. It’s never an extremely hard game but it isn’t that easy to complete as some of the previous Kirby games.

Also take note that some of the game’ bosses are more than just a battle. Some of the bosses need new ways to defeat them. You’ll need to understand the way they fight and move  in order to be able to destroy them.

All in all the story mode offers a classic Kirby experience but thanks to the improvements and new powers it feels like a fresh game. It never gets boring thanks to the transformations and the higher difficulty. As said before, the Story Mode isn’t the only game that you’ll find in this Triple Deluxe.

Dedede’s Drum Dash.

The second game that can be played is called Dedede’s Drum Dash and is a rhythm game. The goal of this game is to reach the finish line by jumping on several drums with King Dedede.  You can perform low and high jumps to gain coins. If you jump on the rhythm of the music, you’ll gain most coins. It’s a rather small mini-game like game but it’s fun to play now and then. It doesn’t offer a lot of variation and it’s rather easy to complete, although the third level proved to be rather hard.

It’s a fun little extra but it’s not a reason why you need to buy Triple Deluxe.

Kirby Fighters.

The third game, Kirby Fighters, offers some more fun. Kirby Fighters can easily be compared with the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Before you enter the battleground you need to select a Kirby with a certain ability. The goal of Kirby Fighters is to fight against other Kirby characters who each hold another power. Just like in the Smash franchise, items fall out of the sky to inflict some more damage to your opponents.

You fight against multiple opponents on different stages. The Kirby Fighters mode can also be played in multiplayer for some extra fun. All in all this is definitely a game mode worth checking out.  Kirby Fighters is a nice alternative until the real Smahs game launches and is definitely more than just a little extra on the gamecard.

Conclusion.

After spending some time with this game we could only conclude that this game offers a great Kirby experience. Thanks to the nice story mode with its clear graphics and nice gameplay, this is a game for the true Kirby fans. It offers enough variation to keep you going and the transformations never felt this good before. The two extra games aren’t all that great but Kirby Fighters really offers some fun. Kirby Triple Deluxe turned out to be another great Nintendo platformer for the 3DS.
