Indie Corner: Minishoot’ Adventures

I love it when games surprise me, like Minishoot’ Adventure, a mix between twin-stick shooting and classic The Legend of Zelda. You’re flying around in a small spacecraft, exploring and fighting your way forward… but you’ll quickly learn it’s best not to go in unprepared. It’s dangerous to go alone, after all.

Wake up

The game starts with the awakening of your little ship. Once you take control, the typical twin-stick action immediately kicks in, meaning you move with one stick and shoot with the other. Where the game really sets itself apart from the start is the setting. You’re not roaming through the vastness of space, but instead hovering over land on a map that strongly resembles the original Zelda games. Just like in those games, there’s a story about you being the chosen one who will save the land, but don’t expect a lot of depth here. It’s the action and atmosphere that carry most of the experience, and after finding your first upgrades, it quickly becomes clear that this is something pretty special within the genre.

After waking up, you’ll travel through several dungeons, defeat bosses, and make your way toward the final boss. Yes, it follows the classic formula quite closely, but combining it with the twin-stick genre works really well. Even though your spaceship isn’t a character like Link, you’ll still bond with it and start caring about its well-being throughout the adventure. The combination of gameplay and that sense of discovery really amplifies the feeling that you’re the hero, and it just clicked with me. Besides the main dungeons and enemies, the game also encourages you to explore the map and uncover its secrets.

Explore and learn

Right from the start, the game invites you to explore the map beyond the main dungeons and quests. You’ll quickly notice hidden paths and optional rooms, often rewarding you with upgraded weapons or better defensive skills. Some of these paths can’t be accessed until you unlock the right upgrade, adding a light Metroid-like layer on top of the formula, without ever turning it into a full Metroidvania.

Besides exploring, you’ll also face plenty of enemies, ranging from smaller threats to bigger encounters. There isn’t a huge amount of variation in enemy types, but it’s still satisfying to take them down. The more experience you gain, the faster you unlock new skills. I really like how well the twin-stick shooter mechanics blend with a more adventurous structure, without ever feeling like a weaker version of either inspiration.

Easy on the eyes

As you can see in the screenshots, the game goes for a clean, minimalistic look, so don’t expect anything groundbreaking. I played it on Nintendo Switch 2 and, while the visuals aren’t impressive in the most traditional sense, they are very easy on the eyes. Everything looks sharp and colorful, and both the world and its enemies come to life, even if they could have used a bit more variation. Supported by a soothing soundtrack, this is one of those games you can easily pick up while traveling to unwind and just enjoy what it has to offer.

Conclusion:

Minishoot’ Adventure offers a unique mix of twin-stick shooting and classic adventure that works surprisingly well. It doesn’t try to impress with visuals or complexity, but instead focuses on delivering a charming and rewarding experience. Some repetition holds it back slightly, but at its price, this is an adventure that’s absolutely worth your time.
