Hands-on: ABSCONDER – Devcom 2025

At devcom I sat down with ABSCONDER, and within seconds it had me locked into its frantic hardcore rhythm. It’s a top-down action runner where you don’t fight, you run, desperately fleeing the compound of an oppressive regime. From the very first attempt, the game makes it clear: hesitation means capture.

What sets ABSCONDER apart is its brutal sense of limited vision. Even though you view the world from above, your perspective is narrowed to a tunnel of sight that constantly keeps you guessing. Every corner is a gamble, should you risk slipping through a shadowy alley that might be a shortcut, or stick to the main path and pray it isn’t blocked? That uncertainty transforms each second into a life-or-death decision.

The movement is fast and unforgiving. I tore through narrow passages, squeezed between barricades, and dove into hidden side streets while hearing my pursuers closing in. When I stumbled onto a shortcut or found a hidden passage, the rush was electric; every discovery felt like buying myself a few more precious seconds of freedom.

Gameplay wise, it’s an exhilarating blend: the raw chaos of Ape-Out mixed with the precision of Lonely Mountain: Downhill. You’re constantly improvising, shaving seconds off your best run, learning the map through failure and sheer instinct. Each new attempt brings that perfect “just one more try” feeling, because you know you can always do better, always escape faster.

What impressed me most was the intensity it managed to pack into such short bursts. Runs don’t last long, but they’re packed with adrenaline. After a couple of runs I realized my hands were still gripping the controller as if my freedom depended on it.

ABSCONDER is lean, sharp, and relentless, a game that strips away everything but pure escape, forcing you to trust your instincts and run for your life. It’s not just about getting out, it’s about the desperate thrill of the chase, and it had me hooked from the very first step.
