Review: Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake

Welcome to our review of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, a game long overdue for a remake.

Theater of war, infinite drama. A masterpiece of historical simulation “Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8” is revived after 20 years. This version includes an improved “All Officers Play” feature, which allows players to play as any officer in the world of the Three Kingdoms. The game is also packed with additional elements that bring the officers to life, such as “Destiny” which can dramatically change the course of events and “Tales” which offer a variety of stories to choose from.

Combining 2D and 3D technologies, the game features both new and nostalgic visual effects, as well as many new officer graphics created specifically for this title. Enjoy the greatest military drama in the Three Kingdoms series, with the largest number of officers and scenarios! Every officer can be the hero! The “All Officers Play” of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 returns. More than 55 scenarios spanning over 80 years and featuring the largest number of officers in the series, from rulers to free officers. Play through a vast, deep, and turbulent Three Kingdoms period as you choose.

Vivid depiction of the drama between officers. A variety of fascinating new features! Many new features have been added to portray a variety of human dramas, such as “Tales” in which players can choose which events unfold. In addition, you can be linked by “Destiny” with other officers, and gain special relationships. The relationship or “Links Forged” between each officer greatly affects how the gameplay unfolds. Changes in that relationship can be ascertained from the “Relationship Chart”.

Graphical enhancements. In addition to newly drawn officer graphics, the scenic beauty of the game is depicted using ink paintings, combining 2D visuals and 3D depth to create a beautiful visual experience of the world of the Three Kingdoms. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is nothing more than a prime example of how a niche genre can grow to become its own thing and well, it is something else if you are unaware of what this game brings to the table.

From massive war boards where you arrange every single detail to letting the game’s AI do things for you, from holding banquets in ancient China to figuring out how to invade neighbouring estates. Games like these are there for the ultimate tactical fans and there is maybe only a small amount of players that truly get into this genre, luckily they got Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake and its “successors”.

Where this game sets itself apart, is the sheer size of everything, there is literally always something to do and it will keep you busy from start to finish. What I do find overwhelming about games like these, it is always the amount of information thrown at you from the get go. There is no use denying it, these games are heavy on the reading and your first few campaigns are basically to be treated as your tutorial. It may sound silly, but there is really that much going on. It may even turn some away, it is that scary.

Downsides on games like these and the added niche part of the game, it may be enough to turn you away from this genre and I totally get that. I am not here to convince you to drop full retail price on a game like this, I just think that if your interest is peeked in any way, you may wanna pick up an older game second hand to see how the genre will click with you. If it does, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is one to pick up next.

In conclusion, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is one of those games that you love or hate. I am frankly speaking not a fan of this genre, but I dont mind reviewing them, see what changed, how the genre evolves over time, like the “live combat” part has become gorgeous and fun to play. So many things speak for this game and I am sure if you are into this genre, this will be a must!
