Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is the kind of game where yes, you can jump in out of nowhere, like all great games, there is a recollection (no pun intended) option to give you the low down of previous storylines. Very helpful and you can ignore it if you like, the storyline about wanting to make peace with the dark territory is pretty much self-explanatory in itself.
At times, you will think like, time to skip a few fights or even ignore side quests, but so far, I have insisted on doing them all and have gotten some fun items out of it. The item management in itself, I would like to see an easier way to select your best gear. It is not always that clear that one item is better than the next due to the variety of mechanics behind things, it is like every item needs a guide almost to compare.
Having played previous Sword Art Online games a little in the past, I do feel this is the best in the franchise as you just get more connected (pun intended) to the storyline as a lot of focus has been invested in the first part of the story. An apparently more comprehensive approach to the franchise and a clear focus on more fluid action.
That is the one thing that was not always perfect in the past, the way you could just seamlessly move around during anything and they just made it so great now. Like the first time you really set foot in the part leading up to the Dark Territory, there is this first real fight with several enemies around and it was just a nice piece of combat.
Now how does it compare to other RPGs? Well, to be able to answer this, I have to disappoint. I would say you have to look at the game as part of a series and yes, Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is an amazing culmination to a series that could be called well above average. It may not be in the regions of Dragon Quest for me personally, but I would not be surprised if it ended up in my personal top 5.
