Review: DC Justice League: Cosmic Chaos

Becoming a superhero is a wish for a lot of kids. Watching all those great superhero movies is fun but playing as a superhero is better. Thanks to DC Justice League: Cosmic Chaos, you can learn the younger gamers what it takes to become the hero of their dreams.

Time to defeat evil

In DC Justice League: Cosmic Chaos, you’ll fight Mr. Mxyzptlk, a villain who wants to make the lives of the Justice League as hard as possible. It’s not a super innovative plot or motivation for the villain but the game isn’t about deep stories, it’s about having fun. You control Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and a couple more DC superheroes. The game is a true spectacle for DC fans as it introduces a lot of heroes and villains along the way. Mr. Mxyzptlk won’t be the only evil mastermind you’ll have to face. If you want to protect Happy Harbor, you’ll need to fight.

The main villain is Starro, a creature that’s able to control people with face-hugging starfish. If Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman are face-hugged by those starfish, it’s game over and you’ll return to a previous checkpoint. It sounds like a serious story but keep in mind that this game is aimed at a younger audience, as you can see on the screenshots. The story has some epic elements in it for sure but it’s all being told in that Saturday morning cartoon style. As an adult playing, it has a certain nostalgia watching those iconic DC heroes fighting evil in a cartoony style while for the younger gamers, the story offers plenty of unexpected moments to keep them going. It’s not a deep or epic story but it gets the job done nevertheless.

Defeat the enemies, master your hero

Happy Harbor is a fun place to explore and acts as an open-world environment. It’s nothing too big but it is fun to explore nevertheless. During the game, you can easily switch between Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in a way that reminded me of the LEGO games. All three heroes come with their own styles and strengths and weaknesses. Exploring Happy Harbor and getting to know the different powers is a fun introduction to the genre. Superman can fly while Batman can glide and use his grapple hook, comparable to how Wonder Woman uses her lasso to gain some momentum. It’s fun to discover the powers of the heroes but the open world also introduces several vehicles like boats and cars to explore even more of Happy Harbor. DC Justice League: Cosmic Chaos feels like an introduction to the open-world genre for younger gamers and it certainly works well. The world is filled with charm and iconic DC lore so it’s definitely amazing to explore the world. But of course, exploration isn’t the only part of the game, the missions are as important.

It’s easy to find the missions in the world since an arrow will literally point them out for you. In missions, you’ll fight enemies using the skills of your heroes. Since this is clearly aimed at a younger audience, don’t expect a high level of difficulty here. Defeating enemies is never difficult and if you understand the skills of your heroes, you’ll defeat certain enemies easily using their weaknesses against them. Combat isn’t that deep but introduces some fun mechanics nevertheless. Besides our three heroes, you can call in the help of other DC heroes during combat. Although these extra heroes aren’t playable, they can certainly deliver some extra damage. You also gain XP during fights which you can use to level certain aspects of your heroes. Once again, nothing too deep but a nice introduction to the genre. Playing the missions will also allow you to grab some fun unlockables and extras such as different costumes and hidden comics.

Co-op exploration

For some extra fun, you can play the open world of Happy Harbor in co-op mode. It’s fun to explore the open world together and use the different powers of the heroes while doing so. That being said, it’s a shame you can’t play the main missions in co-op. Although the free-roaming co-op is fun I do feel like it could have been so much better, why not make the entire game playable in co-op? A missed opportunity if you ask me. During co-op, the camera will also focus on one character so you can’t wander off too far away from each other. It’s fun to stop Mr. Mxyzptlk’s chaos in Happy Harbor together but there are some missed opportunities nevertheless.

Conclusion:

DC Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is a fun game for a younger audience and serves as a fun introduction to several genres. It’s not perfect and there certainly are some hiccups but if you’re a young DC fan, you’ll certainly enjoy playing this.
