Review: Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams dry twice

Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams dry twice is the next installment in the long-running series. It’s a direct sequel to the first reboot in the series titled Leisure suit Larry – Wet dreams don’t dry. Original creator Al Lowe again wasn’t involved.

Leisure Suit Larry

I remember the day Leisure Suit Larry in the land of the lounge lizards came out. I was a young point-and-click adventure enthusiast growing up. Every Sierra and Lucasarts adventure I got my hands on was played in those days. Along came Leisure Suit Larry which looked to me like it would be another king’s quest. Boy was I wrong… I was definitely too young to play a game that was essentially a soft porn adventure. Despite my realization, I did what every curious boy would do at that moment… continue playing the game when I was sure my parents wouldn’t find out. The game was filled with lewd conversations filled to the brim with sexual innuendo, half of which I didn’t understand at the moment.

Fast forward 30+ years

The first leisure suit larry was a sleeper hit for Sierra and sequels were inevitable. 5 were made in the heydays of point-and-click adventures and became cult classics. After the point-and-click hype Leisure Suit, Larry and its titular character Larry Saffer disappeared from the scene. Larry Loveage took over for a few titles as the new Leisure Suit Larry but didn’t honor the original legacy in my opinion. Last year we finally saw a new Larry Laffer title in the form of Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams don’t dry. I was bummed to find out Al Lowe was not on board and the game was being developed by a totally different team. Luckily the game went back to its original point-and-click roots and was entertaining enough to justify a sequel.

Welcome to Cancum

Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams dry twice takes of where Wet dreams don’t dry ends. Don’t worry if you haven’t played the first reboot because the game starts out with a lengthy recap. Larry is still looking for his one true love, Faith. With the help of his PiPhone he sets out to look for her. Searching the sunny and huge Kalau’a archipelago to find Faith will take you across more than 50 newly hand-drawn locations filled to the brim with phallus-shaped objects. Every scene is very well detailed and offers a multitude of comic references.

Voice acting on point

With over 40 different characters to interact with the game depends on good writing and good voice acting. The interactions have sexual innuendo mixed at an unbelievable rate. At the start of the game I laughed, after about an hour I stopped caring because I was numbed by the amount of ‘jokes’ in every conversation. Be considerate with the amount of Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams dry twice you want to play in one sitting because it might just get a bit much after a while. To be fair, I might also get too old for this type of humor. The voice acting in this game is very on point. Each line is excellently performed by the voice actors which elevates the game immensely.

Easy adventure

Leisure Suit Larry – Wet dreams dry twice uses its in-game PiPhone as a means to help out the player in solving the puzzles. The phone assistant “Pipers” acts as a companion for Larry to talk to when he isn’t quite sure what to do. The puzzles/problems you need to solve aren’t all that difficult in my opinion. The fact you can highlight every item you can interact with makes it even easier. After a while, I figured out I could just systematically flip through every object with a press of a button and collect a bunch of items. Every time I needed an item to solve a puzzle, it was all quite logical and I felt I never needed to think much. I like my point-and-click adventures a bit more challenging, to be honest.

Conclusion

Leisure suit larry – Wet dreams dry twice is a sub-par point-and-click adventure with the added novelty of featuring Larry Saffer. The conversion to make this title available on consoles could’ve been made smoother. A redeeming factor to keep playing this game is to find out how many sexual references you can make in one game.
