When I started playing this game, admitting I’m a big fan of the Netflix series since day one, surprisingly enough I did not have high hopes. A lot of animation to games conversions sadly do not cut it. Luckily for the Trollhunters game, I was aware that this game was intended for the age range between six years old and 12 years old.
This game is actually quite a decent platformer when keeping in mind that it is for the youngest among us. Personally, as I am not the target age intended, I did find the game slightly repetitive and easy. But I can clearly see that the youngest among us will have a blast playing this game.
The platforming itself can be best described and compared to the original Super Mario games in both style and ease of use. While you cannot compare the Trollhunters game to the Super Mario games to the extent that Super Mario basically set the bar. but All in all, the Trollhunters game does not disappoint at all!
Most of the time you are running around and either slaying enemies or collecting dirty socks, not joking dirty socks are in-game currency, which is so hilarious and disturbing at the same time. Lovers of the Netflix series will however see the throwback to the series. As a big fan of the series myself, I must say that most of the game has a very high Trollhunters feeling.
I liked how you traveled back in time as the current day Jim, had to find a way to become past day Jim and just how hilarious it was that the item needed, was so incredibly expensive that you are unable to buy it, but due to your leaving the store, you get the item for free. Small things like this really set the bar at the exact same level of entertainment that the Netflix series brings.
While the platforming might be a little easy at first, it does slowly increase its difficulty level over time and before you know it you do get more of a challenge. In all honesty, it does not become difficult but it does stop being overly easy. Again with the intended age in mind, it all makes perfect sense.
parts of the game can be called repetitive but it never bothered me much. The only real thing that irked me, are the gnomes in the game that do provide a challenge to grab. Maybe something can be said as well for finding all The Dirty socks as they are in-game currency, but it is never impossible to grab most of them in a game and despite some of them being hidden, I usually found at least three out of four in any given level.
Despite being for a completely different audience, I can however admit that this game was more fun than I expected it to be, maybe due to my love for the Netflix series but it really grabbed my arm and kept me going. I am quite certain that kids will love this game probably even more than I did. For adults however, I would recommend against buying the game for personal play unless, like me, you are a big fan of the series. Do know that the game is intended for six/twelve-year-olds when you buy it.
in conclusion, Trollhunters the game is a really great segue, 4 young kids, to get into the platforming genre and if parents are looking for suggestions for the upcoming Holidays, do give this game a fair chance because I do think your kids will like it.
