Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a game in a very long line of products in a franchise that may have seen its best days, but with the latest addition of Dragon Ball Super, the manga has gotten a fresh breath of air and I read em as soon as possible after release. Needless to say, I am a big fan of the series and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one big ode to the original series.
The game picks up at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z and at first presents itself as a typical fighting game. Having played one too many Dragon Ball fighters in my life, I had little to no expectations about the way it would play. To my big surprise, the game actually presented itself very well and with some exciting fighting ahead of me, I was not disappointed. The reason I am usually going into these anime turned games products is because they tend to be mediocre at best.
Not Kakarot though, the game had a great first impression and I loved my initial battle/tutorial experience. It played very smoothly on my PlayStation 4 Slim and even the full three-dimensional fighting was barely any hassle to get used to and it looked splendid. Crisp to the feel and snappy at it as well. It has been a while that I was this impressed with a game like this.
After my initial fight, it became clear that this was an action RPG after all and all while following the original storyline of the show, I think it is clear that I can barely provide any spoilers if you have seen the show, but for the record, I am keeping things limited to the first real fight in the game, the battle against Raditz, the brother of our hero Goku.
After his arrival on earth, he tries to find his brother Kakarot who was supposed to exterminate all life on the planet, but the story of his memory loss is well known to fans of the show. Piccolo is the first to get close to him after flying through the local area where he was training. Collecting orbs for further advancing your character along the way. Once he gets to Raditz, you get to fight him. If you encounter enemies along the way, you get to fight the fodder that they are.
The fun part, you get to beat him, but in the storyline, that results in a loss. Raditz then flies off to go meet with the bigger energy reading out there, thinking it is Kakarot. Once arrived at the island of Master Roshi, Raditz gets into a fight with Goku and with the same outcome, you end the fight by “losing” and before you know it, you are teaming up with your enemy Piccolo.
There is just so much to do in this game, fighting is just a small part of it. Cooking, earning money, retrieving the girly magazine for Master Roshi, … With the way Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot! was designed, there are so many things to keep in mind. From getting your support characters set up to arranging cooking skills and so much more.
And then the game really starts. Support characters that help you fight is the logical next step. The very next fight, you and Piccolo against Raditz and that is really just the beginning of the Dragon Ball Z game you always knew you wanted. This might be the best Dragon Ball game out there, period.
In conclusion, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is easily the best Dragon Ball Game I ever played. It provides a total experience for fans and the atmosphere throughout the game is just top notch. At times, I wished I had never read the manga or watched the anime so I could really experience it all for the very first time!
