Hands-on: Biomutant

Bio-Mutant is one of the most anticipated games of current-gen consoles. A team of 20 people is working as fast and qualitative as they can to get this game out for the public. But it’s often better to wait a bit longer than to receive an unfinished product. To fill in the gap between the actual game and Gamescom, they’ve shown us a video what the game’s all about. Let’s dive in!

Biomutant will be an RPG type of game set in the open world which is an environment of 8 by 8. So you can expect a big playground to fool around in. We’ve had the opportunity to see a presentation of the game where the open world is the main focus. The video presentation showed us the different tribes that will play a major role in the game. These different races will be open for conversation and compromises. All of these different races hold the secret of a certain fighting technique with a special type of weapon that might come in handy during your journey. To get this certain technique ( which allows you to use a different weapon), you’ll have to perform errands to gain some influence within this faction. Once you’ve gained some influence, you’ll gain access to a mission to conquer a strategic point on the map. Conquering strategic points will let your character even gain more influence which will grant you access to these different fighting techniques.

Starting conversations with these different tribes shouldn’t be taken for granted as they present you different choices which will influence the story along the way. Making choices and dealing with the consequences is what will make this game stand out from other generic RPG’s. All of these choices are also inspired by “Yin and Yang”, in other words, “good and bad”. Some choices will influence your standings with a certain race positively while others can burn bridges between formed alliances. Every choice you make will alter the story and create a different ending each playthrough.

The presentation showed us that the world truly lives. There are different beasts spread out over the environment and within their natural habitat. They will act as any normal animal would and that’s “instinctively”. Some animals are more aggressive towards you while other animals play it more save. These different animals will have different “attack” styles and different rewards. There are also some big beasts that should be taken care off because the deaths of these beasts are important for the survival of “The Tree of Life” which has 5 different roots spread out over the country. Each root hosts the habitat of a “BIG” scale beast, so you better be prepared. Each great boss at the root of the “Tree of Life” will have different mechanics that turn each battle into a challenge, it’s up to you which boss you tackle first but it’s always going to be with the help of a mechanical mount. These mounts make each battle a bit easier but it all depends on how these mechanical beasts have been improved along your journey. All of these special mechanical mounts should be used during the battles of these great beasts because their equipment is key to survive the “Great beast attacks”. I’m saying “should be” because the mechanical mounts are optional but the developers convinced us that these Great Beasts won’t go down with a fight and without the proper equipment, these battles are going to be tough. So expect challenging big scale fights!

The game won’t feature any quest markers except when you’re close to “important” characters. Why? The developers don’t think a linear playstyle should fit this type of game. It’s all about exploring, scavenging and learn about different situations that are occurring right under your nose. As a player, you choose how to play the game and not the other way around. Sure, the game will hold your hands for 25 minutes but after that, it’s up to you to make the best of it. Also, there will be almost no cutscenes, because the development of certain characters is far more important for storytelling than some cinematic videos. You’ll play the game and the game will let you know when you can start the series of event to end the game. These events will pop-up once you’ve completed certain criteria.

As an RPG game, you’ll be able to choose from different classes at the beginning of your adventure. The game will let you choose between a commander, deadeye and a psychonaut. These different classes start off with special weapons that can only be used with their specific class but each class can learn from each tribe to gain access to these special fighting techniques that eventually scapes a hybrid character. Each weapon, cloth and component are different from each other. These upgrade modules will make your character a lot better. Each skin you pick has 6 DNA codes that can be morphed. Once altered, the player benefits from stronger components. Clothes are also very important, you gain clothes that look cool but also give important stats. These stats are important to enter some of these areas. Colder weather will push you into thicker clothes and toxic weather will make you wish you had a gas mask. The game is open for you to search for supplies. Once these supplies have been found, you can use these supplies to craft weapons or clothes.

So far, what we’ve seen seems promising and very challenging for the development team. Looking at this video, you can expect to see some interesting things happening around you. Big scale bosses and mini-bosses will happen to you and it’ up to you to confront them in battle. “Choose how you want to approach them…” should be always in your mind as the developers made sure that they made a game where the player’s the main character. The main character makes decisions and makes its own story.
