MachiKnights is a bit of a weird game, it plays great but on the slower spectrum of things. This is the most important remark I will make for this entire review.
Allow me to explain how this game works. Basically, much like a musou game, you need to survive by slaying all inbound enemies and there are specific tasks in regards to what enemies need to be slain and add in a timer in which to complete this task. There you have it, the basic gist of a game that plays great but has some speed issues in my humble opinion, but at the same time, they do not matter.
I know I am not making any sense, but let me try to explain this. At times, many enemies are surrounding you and depending on your choice of the fighter, one of three, you will be able to barge through them or not. This is by far the most rewarding attack, though at the same time the most limited as it takes up a lot of your special energy. Sure, there are still the normal attacks, after which the special energy meter will fill up, but you get the idea, those barely dish out any damage and are not really that valuable for anything but the refilling.
As I was trying out the shooter character, I was not able to dash through enemies, but I was stuck with a very powerful shot, but that was not sufficient to take out most enemies in 1 go. You need to hit enemies a lot. Really a lot! At the first boss, it becomes clear that you do need that speed to survive. So you either use the special energy to perform a dash away from the “red field that indicates where the boss will strike” or you get hit by a very damaging attack. Sure, as you destroy the little ones around him, sooner or later you will be getting hearts to replenish your health, but remember my mention of a clock? That is ticking and your lack of speed makes this a tricky one.
I am not really complaining about this, I am actually excited that the developers went out of their way to make it hard enough not to be a walkover of a game, but at the same time, they did balance the fine line between harsh and just right. Select your warrior carefully and the difference between do or die becomes obvious or very thin.
Graphically, this game is nothing to write home about. Cute stills and decent animations when needed, but nothing out of the ordinary. Machi Knights – Blood Bagos gets its value from the core reason why games exist. This game entertains!
In conclusion, Machi Knights – Blood Bagos is fun to play but might need some serious perseverance at times to stick with it! I loved it and look forward to hopefully finishing it in Hell mode one day!
