Indie Corner: Zotrix: Solar Division

Zotrix: Solar division is a tower defense game. Tower defense games were very popular when they were browser-based but did have some issues on consoles. Now, how does it play on the Switch? Let’s find out, shall we?

Well, to be honest, it’s really weird to interact with the game in the beginning. Your left Joy-Con will control the menu on the left and by pushing the left shoulder button (zL) you take your towers (or weapons) to the map and you place them quite normally. Then the joystick on your right Joy-Con controls the menu on the right which actually is the flow of the game. Start the next wave and set the speed of the enemies and such things.

The game is built around a cool story. You are from the mother planet called Zotrix. Zotrix has a lot of space stations which need to be defended against alien attacks. The last defense commander didn’t really do a good job and a lot of people died. Because of this you are now the new defense commander and have to take the job onto yourself to protect the space stations.

Each space station has 3 levels. You have to complete the first two levels to be able to go to the next space station. The third level is optional and a lot harder than the first two. In the left side of your screen, you see the towers that you can place on the map. And when you select these you get some info about the tower and of course its cost. On the right of the screen, you see your budget and the info about the level you are in. Such as the number of waves still to come and how many lives you still have.

You lose lives by letting aliens through the level and into your space station. I have noticed in some levels that I would let an alien through, yet I wouldn’t lose a life. That is probably just a little bug but still worth noting. It’s a really fun game to play but it could use a little more thought when it comes to the user interface. But when you get into the game after just a few minutes, you get really used to it and it doesn’t matter. The soundtracks are good and the game plays well. However, it’s nothing new and has a few mistakes.
