Welcome to our review of the newest Indie game on the Nintendo Switch eShop called Boost Beast!
When I first saw the promo video of this game, I immediately thought this was going to be another three in a row game like the tons that already exist on mobile devices, we all know them, Candy Crush, Fishdom, …
Enter Boost Beast!

Boost Beast has a storyline throughout the game, where you basically protect the world against zombies in a grand total of 12 areas, each harder than the previous. Every time you score a three-in-a-row, you send your animal warriors into the battlefield on top of the game so they can fight the zombies!

The official description for the story:
A sudden virus outbreak has infected the entire human race and turned everyone into zombies… Only a small group of animals survived the outbreak. In order to restore peace in the world, Alec, the king of the dogs, sets out on a journey with his animal army to exterminate the zombies.
Simple controls! Match 3 of the same animal blocks to call upon your animal friends and defeat the wave of incoming zombies.

Yeah, that’s right, this game is a mix of several genres, beat’m up, puzzle and defense all in one. You defend yourself against the hordes of invading zombies in order to advance and save everything!
In true Match three-style, you get the usual bombs, megabombs, color bombs, … You can also call in the help of your friends to help you out when you are in a pinch! Sometimes the animals are locked in cages, … More than meets the eye!

While this game is very gimmicky, I found it to be very amusing and to be a little bit more than just match three. The hordes of zombies that invade, they often have special requirements to beat as well, like needing to be in a specific color. Let me tell you, having to score 20 pink animals to beat the 20 pink zombies, it is not always easy, especially when you need to score 20 red ones after that and 20 blue ones after that!
While the premise of the game is indeed a basic Match three, you do still need to look on top, see if the dog king is still safe and not about to be overrun by the zombies.

In conclusion, not much can be said about match 3 games, you either like them or you don’t, add some strategy to the story and you got Boost Beast, a decent enough indie game that is worth trying out!
I am rating it at 80%, which seems high, but the variety of this genre is generally limited, the developers did a great job to make it a lot more interesting and that deserves proper credit!
