Review: Snipperclips

Snipperclips is a game about life itself. It’s a game that demonstrates what people are capable of when they work together. Sometimes you’ll have to let go certain pieces of each other in order to see the big picture. Sometimes you’ll need to fill up your empty holes to become whole again, to become who you once were, in order to reach the end together. This little masterpiece is the perfect example of what working together should look like. Behind everything you cut out in your life, there’s something good waiting to happen.

A true masterpiece

Just like almost everybody, I play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my new Nintendo Switch on a daily basis. This is perhaps the game most Switch users are currently playing simply because it’s great and there aren’t that many games available on the console yet. If you’re looking for a second game to play, you might want to consider Snipperclips. This adorable puzzle game is without a doubt a game that deserves your attention.

The best thing about Snipperclips is that you immediately know what you have to do. This game focusses on puzzles set in a platform environment. You can play it alone but we strongly recommend to play it with somebody else in the local co-op mode. Snipperclips is all about trimming and reshaping both (or four) characters in order to solve puzzles. That’s about everything you need to know. By cutting out certain parts of each other, you’ll be able to solve the puzzle and advance in the game.

Strong thanks to its simplicity

The moment you’ll start playing Snipperclips, you’ll immediately fall in love with its simplicity. This isn’t a game that’s trying to impress with impressive 3D textures and top-notch lighting effects. The characters of Snipperclips are just blocks, walking around while making funny faces. You can move from left to right, jump, crouch or tiptoe, every move comes with another expression on the character’s faces and this will make you smile without a doubt. It’s crazy how badass your character can look at one moment and how fast this can change to a silly face. Walking around and cutting each other to pieces is very tempting thanks to these lovable characters but that’s not the goal of the game.

The goal is to solve several puzzles and simplicity is once again what makes it so good. The puzzles are never truly explained. Just by looking at the screen, you’ll need to understand what you’ll need to do. A firefly and an empty lantern? Seems like you already got an idea. A bowling ball and a hoop? Well, things certainly got interesting! You always understand the goal of the puzzle in seconds and once you do, the fun truly begins.

Always try new things

The moment you figure out what the goal of the puzzle is, you’ll immediately start cutting and reshaping your characters. Sometimes, you’ll find the solution by luck but most of the times, you’ll follow a certain strategy to reach the end. The best thing about this strategy is that you can use different ones. The hook to drag down balloons, for example, won’t be the same hook as the one the other player created. The game offers the right kind of difficulty level to keep things light and fun but it never gets too easy to solve a puzzle.

This results in a very open setting where you’re not scared to try something different. You’re constantly running around, trying out new things and cutting out new shapes. The game offers a wide variety of puzzles where shape matching proved to be one of the easiest puzzles to solve. Without spoiling too much, you never really know what the game will throw at you in the next level and that’s the charm of it all. The puzzlez and settings are so weird that they just wouldn’t fit in another game. Snipperclips is made for extraordinary puzzles and that’s exactly what you’ll get.

More players, more modes

As said before, Snipperclips offers the best experience when you play together as a team of two. It doesn’t end there, however. The game supports up to four players, all using a separate Joy-Con. If you want to play with four, you’ll need to have four Joy-Con controllers since Pro Controllers aren’t supported. We’re guessing not a lot of players already bought a second set of Joy-Cons but if you did, it’s definitely worth inviting some extra friends to play Snipperclips.

Besides the 45 main levels of the game, you’ll discover 20 extra levels meant for groups, set on a larger level. Those extra levels offer some more challenges and more outside the box thinking to solve them. But it doesn’t end there, you can also play head-to-head basketball, a chaotic deathmatch and an extremely addictive air hockey game as a group. These extra levels and fun modes offer more than enough fun to have a great time on your Nintendo Switch together with four of your friends.

Conclusion:

Snipperclips is a hidden masterpiece that might be overlooked due to the high quality of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you want to see something else than Hyrule, Snipperclips should be the second Switch game you get. Its simplicity is what makes it so good. The puzzles, characters and art style are all adorable and don’t need extra explanation. This is one of those rare game that can be enjoyed by everybody, gamer and non-gamer. Be sure to give this one a go!
